Parker leads W&J past Earlham

Danielle Parker scored 16 points as Washington & Jefferson defeated Earlham, 77-61, Saturday in the consolation game of the Springhill Suites Tournament in a women’s college basketball game.

Parker, a freshman from Canon-McMillan, also had five rebounds and three assists for the Presidents (1-1).

Alyssa Riley added 14 points off the bench for W&J, which led 37-23 at the half and 61-40 entering the final quarter.

Charlerloi graduate Mia Woytovich added 10 points and five rebounds, while Amirah Moore had 10 points and six rebounds in the winning effort. Washington High School graduate Mya Gordon chipped in a team-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Hannah Franklin had a game-high 18 points for Earlham (0-2).

Waynesburg 87, Defiance 79: Chartiers-Houston graduate Addy Knetzer led five scorers in double digits with 22 points as Waynesburg picked up its first win of the season with an 87-79 victory over Defiance at the Penn State Behrend tournament.

Knetzer also had eight rebounds as the Yellow Jackets (1-1) took control of the game in the second half, scoring 54 points.

Katie Gehlmann and Monica Starre added 14 points each, while Haley Delaney had 12 points and eight rebounds. Avella graduate Mackenna Drazich chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Kelsey Trieje had 29 points and 13 rebounds for Defiance (0-1), while Mekai White scored 22 points off the bench.

California 74, Kutztown 52: Seairra Barrett scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds as eighth-ranked California cruised to a 74-52 win over Kutztown in a non-conference game.

Abby Sporio added 13 points off the bench, while Precious Martin had 11 points and Mikki Glenn 10 for the Vulcans (3-0). Glenn also had eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

Cal led just 35-32 at the half before putting together a 17-9 run to start the second half.

Kalee Fuegel had 13 points to lead Kutztown (1-1), while Kelsey Watson added nine rebounds in the losing effort.

Men’s basketball

Kutztown 80, California 65: Ryan Connolly had 20 points as No. 14 Kutztown pulled away from California in the second half to pick up an 80-65 non-conference win over the Vulcans in a men’s basketball game.

Josh Johnson added 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for Kutztown (2-0), which outscored Cal (2-1) 39-30 in the second half.

Dan Cuevas had 15 points and Anthony Lee 12 in the winning effort.

Ramon Creighton led the Vulcans with 14 points, while Robel Teckle had 12 and Daniel Sapp 10. Tony Richardson had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Vulcans.

Muskingum 78, Waynesburg 62: Jarrell Marsh’s 22 points helped Muskingum spoil Waynesburg’s season opener with a 78-62 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Marcus Dempsey had 16 points and Joshua Keyes added 14 rebounds – eight offensive – despite not scoring a point for the Muskies (2-0).

Jon Knab scored 14 points and had nine rebounds, while Marcus Wallace added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (0-1), who trailed 39-34 at the half.

Arcadia 84, Washington & Jefferson 52: Phil Pierfry had 15 points as Acradia made 10 of 16 shots from three-point range in an 84-52 non-conference win over Washington & Jefferson.

Pierfry hit all four of his three-pointers in the game, while Josh Scott had 12 points, Evan Slone 11 and Ryan Kelley 10 in a balanced scoring attack for Arcadia (1-2).

Brian Lindquist had 13 points and Brian Graytok 12 for W&J (0-2), which made just three of 28 three-point attempts and shot 31 percent overall.
