Former Wild Things pitcher Smith gets call to major leagues
Former Washington Wild Things pitcher Chris Smith was promoted to the major leagues Wednesday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Smith played for the Wild Things in 2011 and 2012. He pitched in six games in his first season, then became the Wild Things’ top starting pitcher in 2012, posting a 9-6 record and 2.92 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 19 games.
After playing for Washington, Smith was signed by the New York Yankees organization. He advanced to Class AA in the Yankees’ system before being released in 2015. He was signed by Toronto and split this year between the Blue Jays’ Class AA and Class AAA affiliates. In 47 relief appearances, Smith had an impressive 1.98 ERA.
Smith gives the Wild Things two former players currently in the majors. Vidal Nuno has pitched in 54 games with the Seattle Mariners this year.
Tom Cochran, who played two seasons (2006-07) with the Wild Things was promoted to the majors for two days by the Cincinnati Reds in 2011 but did not appear in a major league game.
“We are happy to celebrate the perseverance of Chris,” said Wild Things general manager Steve Zavacky. “He has reached his goal of playing major league baseball and our organization is proud to have been a part of his journey. It is our mission to get these players noticed by scouts so they can achieve their goals, and seeing Chris as the third Washington Wild Thing to make it to the big leagues is gratifying.”
