High school baseball: PIAA pitching rules spark South Fayette comeback

South Fayette scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on bases loaded walks to edge Hopewell, 4-3, in a Section 2-AAAA baseball game Monday in a game affected by the new PIAA pitching rules.

South Fayette pitcher Tristan Tinney went seven innings, striking out 10 for the Lions (1-0, 2-0), throwing 100 pitches, the limit placed on pitchers in one game by the PIAA this season.

Joey Rock allowed four hits for Hopewell (0-1, 3-4) over six innings, but threw 95 pitches. Rock was lifted for a reliever, who allowed a hit, hit a batter, and walked three, recording just two outs before the winning run was scored.

• Blake Smith and Luke Mary each had RBI singles to pace Peters Township to a 2-0 win over Baldwin in a Section 3 opener in Class 6-A.

Winning pitcher Eric Riotto struck out five and Garrett Miller pitched four shutout innings, striking out five, to earn the save for PT (6-0). Baldwin is 2-1.

• McGuffey scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and Matt Novak and Lane Wilkerson made them stand up as the Highlanders defeated Belle Vernon, 2-0, in a six-inning, rain-shortened Section 3-AAAA game.

Novak allowed three hits over five innings, while Wilkeson kept Belle Vernon (0-1, 2-2) off the board in the sixth to earn the save for McGuffey (1-0, 3-1).

Belle Vernon’s Deven Judy allowed four hits and struck out nine, while both runs were unearned.

• Winning pitcher Nick Herrnberger hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Carrick had grabbed a 6-5 lead, to propel Trinity to an 8-6 Class 5-A Section 2 win.

The Hillers (1-0, 2-1) grabbed a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second before Carrick (0-1, 1-1) scored one run in the top of the third and five in the fourth before Herrnberger entered in relief and threw four shutout innings.

• Sophomore Cam Weston did a little of everything in Canon-McMillan’s 3-0 victory over host Upper St. Clair in the Class 6-A Section 3 opener for both teams.

Weston three a two-hit shutout and helped his cause by smacking a solo home run as the Big Macs improved their record to 2-4 overall. Weston struck out 10 and issued only one walk. Canon-McMillan scored the only run it would need in the top of the first inning and led 2-0 before scoring three times in the seventh.

Ian Hess doubled for C-M. Hess, Weston and Cam Walker each had two hits.

USC’s record is 0-1, 2-5.

• Hunter and Luke Robinson combined on a five-hitter, Trey Rohanna drove in two runs and Waynesburg edged visiting Seton-La Salle 4-3 in the Section 3-AAA opener at Meadowlark Park.

Waynesburg (1-0, 3-1) took a 4-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs in both the second and fifth inning. Seton-La Salle closed to within 4-2 in the sixth and made it a one-run game with a run in the seventh but the Rebels had the potential tying run thrown out trying to steal home to end the game.

Hunter Robinson struck out 13 and allowed only three hits over six innings. He left after throwing 96 pitches. Luke Robinson got the final three outs and earned a save.

Rohanna’s triple in the fifth scored two runs and gave Waynesburg the 4-0 lead.

• Matthew Barrish threw a three-hitter, using just 79 pitches, as Carmichaels defeated Bentworth, 5-1, in a Section 1-AA game.

Joel Spishock doubled and drove in two runs for the Mikes (1-0, 3-0).

Riley Nickeson took the loss for Bentworth (0-1, 1-3).

• Austin Miller’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 6-6 tie and lifted Frazier to a 7-6 Section 1-AA win over Beth-Center.

The Bulldogs (0-1, 0-3) had tied the game in the top of the sixth on a two-run Bailey Lincoski double. Hunter Bowen added triple for the Bulldogs.

Greg Lynch and Timmy Sedock had doubles for Frazier (1-0, 1-2).

• Chartiers-Houston sent 16 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring 10 runs, to beat Burgettstown, 10-2, in a rain-shortened Section 1-AA game.

Matt Whitfield had two doubles, A.J. Johnston and Dustin Weiser had one each, while A.J. Myers tripled for the Bucs (1-0, 1-1). Jordan Davis got the win.

Sam Huggins took the loss for Burgettstown (0-1, 0-2).

• A 10-run second inning propelled Mapletown to a 15-0, three-inning victory over Geibel in a non-section game.

Dylan Rush and Brian Bogden each had a triple and three RBI for Mapletown (1-0, 2-2). Garrett Phillips and Tanner Griffin each drove in two runs.

• Eden Christian Academy scored eight runs in the third on the way to a 13-5 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section game. Seth Delposen and Dylan Kingan each had a double for Eden Christian Academy (1-2).

Isaac Dean had two doubles and four RBI for the 0-3 Rockets. Gage Clark doubled.
