High school baseball roundup: Waynesburg rallies to stay unbeaten in 3-AAA
Trey Rohanna’s two-run double capped a nine-run top of the sixth inning as Waynesburg rallied for a 12-7 victory at Mt. Pleasant in a Section 3-AAA game Monday.
The win keeps Waynesburg unbeaten in the section at 3-0. The Raiders are 5-1 overall.
A pair of three-run innings helped Mt. Pleasant forge a 7-3 lead after five innings before Waynesburg mounted its late charge. A two-run single by Dalton Riggenbach cut the Vikings’ lead to 7-5 and a Tyler Rush single made it a one-run game. The Raiders tied the score on an error and pinch-runner Ryley Metheny raced home on a passed ball to put Waynesburg ahead 8-7. Rohanna’s double eventually made it 12-7.
Brandon Turcheck was the winning pitcher with three innings of relief. Kyle Blasoc hit a double for the Raiders.
•Logan Myhle threw a six-hitter and Dylan Wilson had a two-run single in Carmichaels’ four-run second inning as the Mikes defeated host Frazier 4-2 in Section 1-AA.
All the runs in the game were scored in the second inning. Wilson’s single gave Carmichaels a 3-0 lead and the Mikes tacked on an insurance run when Hunter Phillips scored on a Frazier error.
The Commordores (2-3, 2-5) pulled to within 4-2 when it put together three of its hits in the second inning, but Mayhle held Frazier to two hits the rest of the way and retired the final 10 batters he faced.
Cody Brown had a double for Carmichaels’ lone extra-base hit. Joel Spishock had two singles.
• It was a good day to be a hitter in the South Park-Ringgold Section 3-AAAA game.
South Park remained undefeated in section play by smacking 21 hits and defeating the Rams 18-8.
The Eagles (4-0, 9-1) trailed 5-2 before scoring seven runs in the third inning and adding nine more over the final three frames.
Mike Venzel led South Park’s attack with four hits, including two doubles. Josh Wagner had a home run and double, and Adam Morris and Steve Moore each doubled.
Ringgold (0-2, 3-2) had eight hits including a triple by Bo Haines. Luke Winterbottom drove in two runs.
Winning pitcher Kevin Vaupel threw a complete game with seven strikeouts.
• Jake Broadwater drove in five runs and pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as Jefferson-Morgan remained undefeated in Section 2-A with an 8-3 victory at Jeannette.
Broadwater, who was making his first start since throwing a no-hitter against Geibel Catholic last week, struck out four. At the plate, Broadwater was 3-for-4 with two doubles as the Rockets moved to 3-0 in the section and 3-3 overall.
Jeannette (2-1, 3-2) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Broadwater induced a game-ending double-play grounder. Shortstop Eli Rafail made a diving stop on a ball seemingly headed up the middle for a hit and completed the 6-3 double play.
• Brandon Powell scored two runs and drove in two others as Section 1-AA leader California defeated visiting Beth-Center 7-4.
The Trojans built a 5-1 lead after two innings and that was enough for winning pitcher Richard Stimmell needed. He allowed only two hits over six innings as California improved to 5-0 in section and 7-1 overall.
Powell and Bobby Harris each doubled for Cal.
• Chartiers Valley pitchers Tristen Zimmer and Jason Orzechowski combined on a four-hitter as the Colts held off visiting Trinity 4-3 in Class 5-A Section 2.
Trinity (1-3, 2-4) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on Jared Watson’s two-run single, but CV (3-1, 3-4) scored three times in the third for a 4-2 advantage.
Konnor Corchado drove in two runs for the Colts. Kyle Steele had two of Trinity’s four hits.
• Mike Howard had two doubles and drove in four runs to help propel West Greene to a 13-3 five-inning win against Geibel in a Section 2-A game.
Gavin Scott tripled and Matt Stoneking and Zach Abbott each had a double for the Pioneers (1-2, 1-5).
• Destin Weiser had two doubles and drove in two runs to help Chartiers-Houston to an 11-1 win over Bentworth in a Section 1-AA game.
Matt Whitfield and Cam Hanley each had a double and drove in two runs for the Bucs (3-1, 3-2).
Jake Maimone had a double for Bentworth (3-2, 4-4).
• Fort Cherry pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of 16 Burgettstown walks during a 17-8 victory over Burgettstown in a Section 1-AA game.
Cam Schaub tripled, had three hits and three RBI for the Rangers (1-3, 3-3). Nick Cook and Adam Bird each had three hits and winning pitcher Max Paterni had a double.
Ryan Lounder and Scott Ferris doubled for Burgettstown (0-5, 1-6).
• Avonworth needed five innings to defeat Washington, 12-2, in a non-section game.
Cory Dick had a triple and four RBI for Avonworth (5-1). Turner Grau and Alex Osborn each had a double.
Isaiah Perry doubled for Washington (2-5).
• Monessen broke open a close game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Mapletown 10-2 in Section 2-A.
Winning pitcher Cory Fleming struck out and hit one of Monessen’s four doubles. Cam Frolo, Zac Evans and Nick Baker also doubled for the Greyhounds (2-1, 2-3), who had only six hits. Mapletown fell to 1-3, 2-5.
• Jeddy Young struck out 10 and Western beaver took advantage of seven Avella errors for a 10-0 victory in a five-inning Section 3-A game.
Young, who also doubled, threw a four-hitter. Garrett Geresti had two of the hits for Avella (0-2, 1-3).
Western Beaver is in second place in the section at 3-0, 3-4.
• Belle Vernon used two big innings and Deven Judy’s two-hitter to beat visiting West Mifflin 10-0 in a five-inning Section 3-AAAA game.
Cole Naylor had a two-run single in Belle Vernon’s four-run second inning, and Jacob Callaway drove in three runs on a single in the Leopards’ six-run fourth.
Belle Vernon is 2-2 in section and 4-3 overall. West Mifflin is 1-1, 1-3.
• Brayden Kay allowed only two runs (one earned) over 5 2/3 innings of relief as McGuffey continued its strong start to the season with an 8-4 victory at Keystone Oaks in Section 3-AAAA.
McGuffey (3-1, 5-2) had hits from nine different players and scored the game’s first four runs in the top of the second inning. Matt Novak drove in two runs and Jordan Reeves scored twice for the Highlanders.
KO (0-1, 1-4) had three extra-base hits but the Golden Eagles left nine runners on base.
