High school baseball roundup: Ringgold gives Roberts first win

Winning pitcher Ryan Varley struck out seven and had a run-scoring double as Ringgold gave interim head coach Don Roberts his first victory, 4-3, over host Uniontown in a Section 3-AAAA game Thursday at Bailey Park.

Ringgold (1-2, 4-3) forged a 4-0 lead after three innings and held off a late comeback by Uniontown (2-3, 2-4) as the Red Raiders left the tying run on second base in the bottom fo the seventh.

Varley and Bo Haines doubled for Ringgold. Varley, who haa run-scoring single in the second inning, and reliever Chase Angotti, who earned a save, combined to scatter nine hits but they also struck out eight. A double by Chad Workman with two out in the bottom of the seventh pulled Uniontown to within a run but Angotti ended the game with a strikeout.

• Waynesburg and Carmichaels combined for only three hits in their nonsection game. That didn’t stop the Raiders and Mikes from combining for 12 runs.

Waynesburg made the most of only two hits, combining them with 10 walks, three his batsmen and three Carmichaels errors to beat the host Mikes 9-3.

Dalton Riggenbach allowed only one unearned run over four innings of relief for Waynesburg (6-1). Hunter Robinson had three RBI for the Raiders and Luke Robinson scored three times.

Carmichaels’s record fell to 5-2.

• Josh Hughes scored three runs and winning pitcher Jared Lingis allowed only three hits as Bentworth defeated visiting Mapletown 13-3 in a five-inning nonsection game.

Bentworth improves to 5-4 overall. Mapletown is 2-6 and have yielded double-digit runs in each of their last three games after shutting out Geibel Catholic.

• Section 3-AAAA leader South Park scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and defeated McGuffey 14-0 in five innings.

The Eagles (5-0, 10-1) had 16 hits including seven that went for extra bases. Mike Kentzel and Kyle Thompson each drove in three runs.

McGuffey is 3-2 in section, 5-3 overall.

• Jordan Delvecchio had three hits as Sewickley Academy edged Avella, 5-1, in a Section 3-A game.

Derek Littlefield limited the Eagles to two hits in the game, both of which came in the first inning, including an RBI single by Dalton Simonelli. SA is 2-1, 3-1.

Noah Taylor went the distance for Avella (0-2, 1-3), allowing eight hits.

• Jake McDougle and Marshal Windsor both doubled as South Side Beaver outlasted error-prone Fort Cherry, 9-7, in a non-section game.

Alex Jones got the win for South Side Beaver (5-3), which took advantage of nine Fort Cherry errors.

Cam Schaub homered, while Cade Krah had a double and four RBI for the Rangers (3-4).

• Ethan Young doubled, drove in five runs and scored three times as Peters Township topped Trinity, 17-5, in a six-inning non-section game.

Tor Sehnert tripled and scored four times for the Indians (9-1), who had 15 hits, including doubles from Brian Livolsi and Kyle Comini. Reliever Dax Ploskins picked up the win.

Zack Johnson had two hits for the Hillers (2-5).
