High school softball roundup: McGuffey upsets unbeaten South Side Beaver
Ella Brookman fired a three-hit shutout and McGuffey beat previously undefeated South Side Beaver 4-0 Friday in a nonsection game in Hookstown.
McGuffey (5-9) has won three of its last four games. Brookman walked one, struck out four and threw a no-hitter, if your throw SSB’s Hunter Hand out of the boxscore. Hand was the only Rams player with a hit, going 3-for-3.
Ellie Serna was 2-for-3 with two RBI for McGuffey, which led 3-0 after two innings. Brian Hunter had a double.
SSB, which is the Section 4-AA leader, is 11-1.
• Keystone Oaks scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and took advantage of six Charleroi errors to beat the Cougars 10-5 in a nonsection game.
Ciara Stickles had a big game for Charleroi (1-10) with a home run and a double. Phoebe Wentzell also doubled.
Keystone Oaks is 5-7.
• Trinity pulled out a 14-13 victory over visiting Laurel Highlands for the Hillers’ first win in Class 5-A Section 2.
Cameron Meier led off an inning with a home run for Trinity (1-7, 3-7). Marlena Bozek was the winning pitcher.
• Jade Renner got her 10th win of the year and threw her first career no-hitter in an 11-0, five-inning victory over Cameron, W.Va., in a non-section game.
Renner struck out two and walked one. McKenna Lampe was 2-for-3, reached on an error, scored 3 runs, stole 3 bases and drove in a run. Madison Lampe scored twice and drove in a run. Kaitlyn Rizor went 3-for-3, with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Madison Renner went 2-for-3 with two home runs and 5 RBI.
Winning pitcher Drew Cane doubled and Jake Sanders went 3-for-3 with a triple as Ace Sporting Goods defeated Washington Hyundai 8-1 Friday in the Washington Pony League.
Losing pitcher Anthony Andy struck out six.
