College softball: Waynesburg sweeps W&J

Cheyenne Wasko’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Courtney Syfert with the winning run to give Waynesburg a 7-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson and a sweep of a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Waynesburg won the opening game, 4-2.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-14 in the PAC and 14-22-1 overall.

W&J (8-10, 15-22-1) had tied the score at 6-6 in the second game on a run-scoring single by Abby Cunningham, who had three hits and three RBI on the day.

Waynesburg’s Alex Lawrence drove in five runs in the second game, three on a second-inning home run. Courtney Messenger was the winning pitcher in relief.

Lawrence drove in two runs in the opening game to back the winning pitching of Messenger, who scattered 10 hits.
