Steelers waive Orndoff
LATROBE – Waynesburg’s Scott Orndoff said last week that he couldn’t wait until the first day in pads at Steelers training camp so that he could show that he belonged in the NFL.
As it turned out, that one day in pads Sunday would be his only one.
Orndoff, a 23-year-old rookie tight end from Pitt, suffered a hamstring injury running downfield to cover a punt. The Steelers announced Wednesday they have placed him on a waived/injured list and signed Jake McGee, a rookie tight end from Florida.
It marked a whirlwind stay at Saint Vincent College for Orndoff, who was attempting to become the first Greene County native since Joe Tafoni of Carmichaels to earn a spot on an NFL roster. Taffoni played from 1967-1973 with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants.
Orndoff, who played his high school football at Seton-La Salle, was a four-year contributor at Pitt, where he appeared in 45 games, making 23 starts. He had 58 receptions for 897 yards and 13 touchdowns with the Panthers. He was signed by the Steelers moments after the NFL draft concluded this year and had spent the entire offseason working with the team.
Orndoff is now free to sign with another NFL team.
