Hagerstown, Brownsville eliminated
After scoring nine runs in the first two innings Tuesday morning, Youngstown, Ohio, staved off a Hagerstown, Md., comeback to win 9-7 in an elimination game of the Pony League World Series.
Despite losing to Hagerstown to open tournament play on Friday, Youngstown’s bats came out hot to start the game, scoring four runs on four hits in the first and five runs on six hits in the second.
Ronnie Howard III, Jake Gehring and Brandon Mikos each doubled in runs; Sean Helpy and Ty Ventresco had RBI singles.
Hagerstown mounted its comeback in the middle innings, scoring two runs in the third and fourth and three runs in the fifth. Corey Jamison doubled in two runs, and Cam Moats hit a two-run home run.
Gehring earned the win for Youngstown, and Jeremy Kreuzweiser shut the door for a two-inning save.
Three first inning runs and three solid pitching performances led Bay County, Mich., to a win over Brownsville, Texas, in an elimination game of the Pony League World Series Tuesday afternoon.
After beating Brownsville to open tournament play Saturday, Bay County jumped on a couple of Brownsville mistakes in the first inning. An error, a walk and hit-batter, and two wild pitches, combined with two singles from Logan Hugo and Blaise Millar, gave Bay County an early 3-0 lead.
Bay County also scored one run in the third, three in the fourth and one in the sixth. In the fourth, Hugo singled in a run and Luke Savage hit a two-run double.
Bay County starter Grant Horner tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Blake Waibel then relieved Horner, earning the win. Tommy Szczepanski followed Waibel in the sixth inning to earn the save. Szczepanski struck out four and in two, no-hit innings.
