Boys basketball roundup: Belleville powers McGuffey to win in title game
Tournament MVP Trent Belleville scored 21 points and had 17 rebounds as McGuffey stopped Burgettstown 69-53 in the final of the McGuffey Tournament Saturday night.
David Chapman added 14 points for the Highlanders (2-0).
Dante Gianfrancesco scored 16 points and Garret Dhans 14 for Burgettstown (1-1).
Beth-Center 56, Yough 42: J.J. Greene scored 18 points — nine in each half – and Beth-center pulled away in the second half to defeat Yough 56-42 in the consoaltion round of the Brownsville tournament.
B-C (1-1) also received some strong play and scoring in the second half from guards Andrew Bower, Andrew White and Easton McDaniel. The Bulldogs trailed 23-20 at halftime but outscored Yough 16-6 in the third quarter to take the lead for good.
Gamal Marbaille led Yough with 10 points.
Belle Vernon 96, Greensburg CC 66: Belle Vernon scored 35 first-quarter points and cruised to a 96-66 victory over Greensburg Central Catholic in the consolation round of the Hempfield tournament.
Albert Gallatin 50, Waynesburg 48:
Nate English scored 13 points and Albert Gallatin used long-range shooting to fuel its fourth-quarter comeback as the Colonials rallied to edsge Waynesburg 50-48 in the Fayette County Coaches tournament held at Penn State Fayette.
Waynesburg (0-2) led 38-34 after three quarters but AG (1-1) outscored the Raiuders 20-10 in the fourth quarter. The Colonials made four of their six three-point field goals during the fourth quarter.
AG won despite Waynesburg’s Darton McIntire scoring a game-high 23 points.
Chartiers-Houston 63, Charleroi 53: Cam Hanley had a big game and it was enough to spark Chartiers-Houston to a 63-53 victory over Charleroi in the consolation game of the McGuffey tournament.
Hanley scored a game-high 28 points as the Bucs pulled away in the middle quarters. C-H led 16-11 after one quarter but increased it 35-21 at halftime and 54-36 after three quarters.
Caleb Carson led Charleroi with 10 points.
Peters Township 62, West Allegheny 60: Colin Cote scored 20 points to power Peters Township to a 62-60 win over West Allegheny in the championship game of the Baldwin-Peters Township Tournament.
Conor Pederson chipped in with 11 for the Indians (2-0).
West Allegheny missed a layup with one second left that would have tied the game.
California 68, Jefferson-Morgan 62:
California put four players in double figures and held off a fourth-quarter charge by Jefferson-Morgan to beat the Rockets 68-62 in the championship game of the Geibel Catholic tournament.
The Trojans led 31-29 at halftime and used a big third quarter to open a 54-42 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.
Ben Miller led Cal with 21 points. He was followed in scoring column by Dru Miller with 17 points, Colin Phillips had 15 and Cochise Ryan 11.
DL Garrett scored a game-high 22 points for Jefferson-Morgan.
