Girls basketball roundup: After slow start, Waynesburg puts end to losing streak
Waynesburg held visiting Jefferson-Morgan scoreless in two of the four quarters Monday night as the Raiders snapped a 16-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 38-20 victory in a nonsection game.
After the first quarter ended scoreless, Waynesburg (1-1) led 12-9 at halftime and then outscored the Rockets 13-0 in the pivotal third quarter for its initial win under first-year head coach Dave Sarra.
Julinna Fowler led a balanced Waynesburg attack with nine points. Paige Rutan contributed eight points, and Shay and Bree Echegaray combined for 15 rebounds.
J-M (0-2) was led by Katey Wolfe’s six points.
West Greene 58, McGuffey 23: West Greene scored 45 first-half points and cruised to a 58-23 victory over visiting McGuffey in a nonsection game.
West Greene, which reached the PIAA playoffs last season, started fast, leading 18-4 after one quarter and 45-9 at halftime. The Pioneers scored only 13 second-half points, all in the third quarter.
Madison Lampe paced West Greene (2-0) with 14 points. Her sister, Mckenna Lampe, followed with 12 points and Kaitlyn Rizor had 10.
Mikahla Maxwell scored nine points to lead McGuffey (0-3).
Ambridge 52, South Fayette 43: Ambridge forged a six-point lead after the first quarter and maintained a lead the rest of the way to defeat visiting South Fayette 52-43 in a nonsection game.
Kara Haslett led the Bridgers (2-1) with 15 points and Chloe Rabold followed with 14.
South Fayette (1-2) received 10 points each from Maddi Gutierrez and Maura Castelluci.
California 40, Brownsville 28: Bailey Vig and Love Porter each scored in double figures for California as it pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Brownsville 40-28 in a non-section game.
The Trojans, who took a 24-23 lead into the final quarter, outscored Brownsville 16-5 in the final eight minutes to earn the win.
Vig finished with a game-high 14 points, while Porter had 13 for California (2-1).
Brownsville (1-2) was paced by Da’ Tayia White’s nine points.
Avella 40, Fort Cherry 35: Bailey Lis scored 15 points and Avella used two strong defensive quarters to deal host Fort Cherry its first loss, 40-36, in a nonsection game.
Avella (2-1) led 9-5 after one quarter, and after an 18-18 tie at halftime the Eagles held Fort Cherry (2-1) to four points in the third quarter to regain the lead.
McKenzie Faure paced the Rangers with 14 points.
Canon-McMillan 66, Steel Valley 25: Canon-McMillan had its offense in high gear as the Big Macs rolled to a 66-25 victory over visiting Steel valley in a nonsection game.
Izzy Allen scored 24 points and had a double-double by grabbing 12 points as Canon-McMillan improved its record to 2-1. Tamara Mathis followed with 21 points.
Morgan Farrah, with 13 points, and Becky Harhai with 10, combined for all but two of Steel Valley’s points. The Ironmen (1-2) fell behind 22-3 after one quarter and 35-11 at halftime.
Carmichaels 47, Mapletown 33: Megan Walker made four three-pointers and scored 22 points as Carmichaels defeated Mapletown 47-33 in a non-section game.
After only scoring 13 points in the first half, Carmichaels (2-1) exploded for 18 in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth to win its second straight game.
Mapletown (1-2) was led by 14 points from Kayle Smith.
Kelsi Smith also had 10 points for the Maples.
