Wrestling roundup: Russell’s pin caps Peters Township’s comeback

Mason Russell pinned Steven Herrera at 2:42 in the 182-pound bout – the last of the match – to give Peters Township a 42-34 come-from-behind victory over Upper St. Clair in the Class AAA Section 2B opener Wednesday night.

Russell’s pin was one of four on the night for the Indians.

Peters Township won four consecutive bouts, which included pins by Colton Jezioro (152) and Brandon Matthews (160).

The Indians’ Luke Mary (170) won a 2-1 decision over Shawn Martin to continue the rally.

Beth-Center 63, Mapletown 18: Four wrestlers for Beth-Center pinned their opponent in less than one minute as Beth-Center defeated Mapletown, 63-18, Class AA Section 2A match.

Todd Fischer (138), Jacob Baker (195), Dominic Fundy (220) and Ronnie White (heavyweight) earned the quick pins for the Bulldogs.

Mapletown’s J.T. Hennessey (145) earned a second-period pin.

Fort Cherry 42, Chartiers-Houston 18: Fort Cherry won the first five bouts as it downed Chartiers-Houston, 42-18, in a Class AA Section 1A match.

The early 5-0 run was highlighted by Chase Belsterling (152) earning a pinning Antony Mento at 1:02.

Aaron and Shane McIntyre then won back-to-back bouts at 160 and 170. Aaron McIntyre won an 8-4 decision over Jake Tiatt, while Shane McIntyre pinned Gary Kutch at 4:30.

Waynesburg 77, Chartiers Valley 4: Waynesburg began the night with eight consecutive pins – five of them first-period falls – as the Raiders cruised to a 77-4 thumping of Chartiers Valley in Class AAA Section 4A.

The Raiders lost only one bout in the match and had nine pins and a victory via technical fall.

Caleb Morris (132), Jackson Henson (138), Colby Morris (145), Trey Howard (152), Caleb Simpson (160), Darenell Johnson (170), Kyle Homet (182) and Luke Robinson (195) began the night with the consecutive falls. Ryan Howard (heavyweight) also had a fall and Wyatt Henson (120) won by technical fall.

Belle Vernon 64, McKeesport 6: Belle Vernon won seven bouts by fall, including five in a row, to overpower visiting McKeesport 64-6 in the Class AAA Section 2A opener.

Maverick Selvoski (138) got Belle Vernon going with a fall in the first bout of the night, and Neiko Kurtz (145), Brock Godzin (152), Zach Hartman (160) and Scott Joll (170) followed with pins for the Leopards. Derek Cesovski and Logant Petrosky (heavyweight) also had falls, each in less than one minute.

McKeesport’s only points came via forfeit.

Canon-McMillan 71, Montour 9: Backed by nine pins, Canon-McMillan routed Montour, 71-9, in a Section 4 match in Class AAA.

Jacob Gardner (120), Remington Ross (132), Tim Hritsko (138), Tanner Rohaley (145), Gerrit Nijenhuis (160), Evan Miller (170), Alec Hendal (195)Jacob Minis (220) and Giomar Ramos (Hvy) had pins for the Big Macs.

Bentworth 54, West Greene 10: Bentworth strung together five consecutive falls in the middle weights and rolled to a 54-10 victory over West Greene in the Class AA Section 2A opener for both teams.

Larry Comito (106), Manny Dovshek (120), Bruck Hook (126), DeJohn Williams (132), Owen Petrisek (138) and West Martin (145) each won by fall for the Bearcats.

West Greene’s Isaac Courtwright scored more than hal of his team’s points with a fall in the 160-pound match.
