Fairmont State wins shootout over Cal, 102-93

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – D’Ondre Stockman came off the bench and scored 28 points, including eight three-point field goals, and Fairmont State held off California 102-93 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.

Fairmont State (7-3), which was the NCAA Division II runner-up last season, made 16 of 37 three-pointers to overcome hot-shpooting Cal. The Vulcans shot 57 percent but were hurt by 14 turnovers and giving up 14 offensive rebounds.

Senior guard Cordell Smith scored a game-high 33 points to lead Cal (5-5). Smith made 12 of 14 shots from the field including 6 of 8 from three-point range.

Fairmont State built a 15-point lead (41-26) with six minutes left in the first half, but Cal closed with a flurry and pulled to within 51-50 at halftime. The game remained close until the final minute.

Smith made a three-pointer that gave Cal an 85-83 lead with a little less than four minutes remaining, but Fairmont State answered with a pivotal 10-0 run. The Vuclans were unable to draw any closer than six points in the final minute.

Fairmont State’s Jason Jolly, who entered the game averaging 22 points per contest, was held to 15 points. Vonte Montgomery scored 24 points, and Caleb Davis and R.J. Hurcherson each had 12.

Cal, which used only seven players in the fast-paced game, received 22 from Jahmere Howze, 21 from Terry Davis and 13 from Isaiah Lewis.
