Parsons, Cushion spark Vulcans
Shatara Parsons and Mia Cushon combined for 40 points and led four California University players in double figures as the Vulcans rolled to an 80-49 victory over the District of Columbia in a nonconference women’s basketball game played at Hamer Hall.
Parsons (21 points) and Cushon (19 points) each made seven of 14 shots from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to power the Vulcans to their ninth win in 10 games. Cal is 4-0 at home.
Parsons continues to lead the PSAC in scoring at 23 points per game after her seventh 20-point performance.
Freshman Bianca Jasper scored a season-high 11 points off the bench for Cal. Junior Abbey Sporio had 10 points in a backup role.
Cal took control of the game with an 11-0 run that opened a 24-11 advantage in the second quarter. After a basket by UDC (2-8), Cal went on 10-2 spurt for a 34-15 lead.
The Cal defense forced 25 turnovers by the Firebirds, who have lost seven in a row.
Men’s results
Penn State 72, George Mason 54: Penn State played without suspended guard Tony Carr at George Mason. It didn’t slow the Nittany Lions.
Lamar Stevens scored 23 points and added 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, Mike Watkins added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Penn State dominated in the post on its way to a 72-54 victory Sunday.
“Coach pushed us harder,” Watkins said. “This was a great team we were going against. Playing against them and playing without Tony, who’s a big factor on our team, we had to pick up the loose ends.”
Carr, who is averaging a team-high 20 points, was suspended for a violation of team rules. Coach Patrick Chambers said the sophomore will return Tuesday for the Nittany Lions (9-3).
Penn State would have been wise to exploit the undersized Patriots (5-7) even with Carr. His absence made the decision to turn to the frontcourt even easier.
Stevens and Watkins combined for 24 points on 11 of 14 shooting in the first half, and Watkins had nine points during an 11-2 spurt that gave Penn State a 20-10 lead. Its edge never fell below eight after that.
Stevens, who had totaled just 14 points in his last two games, created problems both in the post and on the perimeter.
“He was really focused on trying to rebound the basketball, and we saw him be ferocious,” Chambers said. “We went to him early and often and he did some good things for us, some good drives, had a good 15-footer, got himself to the free throw line. He looked for Mike a bunch. I thought he played a quality game on both ends of the floor.”
Penn State owned a 26-8 scoring advantage in the paint in the first half and a 40-26 edge inside for the game.
Sophomore Justin Kier scored a team-high 17 points for George Mason, which committed 15 turnovers and was 0 of 14 from 3-point range. The Patriots have averaged 52.5 points and are 4 of 37 on 3-pointers in their last two games.
Duquesne 74, North Carolina A&T 58: Mike Lewis II scored 10 of Duquesne’s first 21 points and finished with 16 points, Rene Castro-Caneddy had all 15 of his points in the second half and the Dukes beat North Carolina A&T 74-58 for their fifth consecutive victory.
It’s the Dukes’ longest winning streak since 11 straight in 2010-11.
Tarin Smith added 14 points and Eric Williams Jr. grabbed 12 rebounds for Duquesne (7-3). Keith Dambrot is the first Duquesne coach to start his inaugural season 7-3 since John Cinicola in 1974-75.
Lewis completed a 3-point play to put Duquesne ahead 54-39 with 12:13 remaining but the Dukes didn’t make another field goal until Smith’s 3-pointer at the 7:37 mark. N.C. A&T wasn’t able to take advantage as the Aggies also had a long field-goal drought of three-plus minutes.
Femi Olujobi led N.C. A&T (6-5) with 13 points.
