Monessen girls snap 26-game losing streak
Qitarah Hardison sank two free throws with 2.6 seconds to play Tuesday night to give Monessen a 37-36 victory over Clairton, snapping a 26-game losing streak.
Hardison scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Monessen (1-4), which outscored Clairton (2-4) 11-10 in the fourth quarter. Marqula Green had 12 rebounds.
Evanti Gibson scored 14 points for the Bears.

Washington 51, South Side Beaver 46: After falling behind at the end of the first quarter, Washington turned to its defense to take control over the next two quarters and led to a 51-46 victory over host South Side Beaver in Section 4-AAA.
Wash High (2-0, 3-1) trailed 11-8 after one quarter, then held SSB to only 12 points over the next 16 minutes to forge a 32-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rams (1-1, 1-4) rallied and pulled to within three points with less than a minute remaining but the Prexies secured the win by making free throws down the stretch.
Jordan Swart led Wash High’s offense with 14 points and Tristen Wood had 10.
Jake McDougal scored a game-high 19 points for South Side Beaver and Nate Statler followed with 15.
Connellsville 45, Peters Township 39: Connellsville had too much Seth Younkin and Peters Township had a very slow start. They added up to a 45-39 victory for Connellsville in Class 6A Section 2.
Younkin, a 6-5 standout, scored a game-high 27 points and Connellsville (2-0, 5-1) held Peters Township to only two points in the first quarter. Connellsville led 11-2 after one quarter and 23-12 at halftime.
The Indians mounted a second-half charge and closed to within two points in the fourth quarter but were unable to pull even as Connellsville held on to win its fifth in a row.
Colin Cote led a balanced attack for PT with 12 points.
Chartiers-Houston 72, Carmichaels 48: Andrew Clark had a big game with 27 points and Chartiers-Houston scored 32 points in the third quarter en route to a 72-48 victory over visiting Carmichaels in the Bucs’ Section 2-AA opener.
Clark, who made three three-point field goals, helped C-H improve to 4-1 overall. The Bucs held Carmichaels (0-2, 4-2) to only 14 first-half points and forged a 14-point lead. The Bucs then broke the game open with the 32-point third quarter.
Cam Hanley also scored in double figures for the Bucs with 14 points.
Jacob Lowry led the Mikes with 17 points and Nick Mundell had 12.
West Mifflin 64, Ringgold 44: Joshua Brown scored 14 points and West Mifflin pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 64-44 victory over visiting Ringgold in Class 5A Section 1.
West Mifflin (1-0, 2-1) led by 10 points after three quarters and outscored Ringgold 22-12 over the final eight minutes. Landon Turtner scored 10 points for WM.
Ben Lawrence paced Ringgold (0-2, 1-5) with 14 points and Jaden Taylor scored 13.
Mt. Lebanon 63, Canon-McMillan 52: Mt. Lebanon outscored Canon-McMillan in the first three quarters, then fought back a comeback attempt before winning, 63-52, in a Section 2 game in Class 6A.
Mike Palmer and Haiden Hinckley 12 points and Sean Loughran added 10 for Mt. Lebo (1-0, 5-1). The Blue Devis led 48-31 after three quarters. C-M won the fourth quarter, 21-15.
Canon-McMillan (1-1, 4-1) was paced by Jason Fowlkes’ 12 points. Ethan Beachy tossed in 11 points and Tommy Samosky 10.
Bentworth 68, Jeff-Morgan 44: Bentworth held Jefferson-Morgan to 18 first-half points on the way to a 68-44 victory in a Section 2-AA game.
Levi Jordan poured in a career-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bearcats (1-1, 3-1). Steven Harner added 19 points.
Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 4-3) was paced by DL Garrett’s 19 points.
Southmoreland 83, Beth-Center 69: Ron Robinson and Cade Rienter combined for 44 points in Southmoreland’s 83-69 win over Beth-Center in Section 4-AAA.
Robinson scored 23 points and Rienter 21 points for the Scotties (1-1, 2-3). Brett Glawacki added 15 points.
For Beth-Center (0-2, 2-4), Jacob Bobbs and Andrew Bower each scored 18 points, J.J. Green added 12 points and Ethan McDaniel 10.
Brownsville 52, West Greene 43: Shandon Marshall scored 19 points to pace Brownsville to a 52-43 win over West Greene in a non-section game.
West Greene (1-3) was led by Austin Crouse’s 22 points.
Keystone Oaks 75, Waynesburg 69: Keystone Oaks rallied for a 75-69 victory over host Waynesburg despite a 29-point performance by the Raiders’ Darton McIntire.
Keystone Oaks improved 4-1 overall. The Eagles received 26 points from Vonte Mitchell and 22 from Josh Snell. Waynesburg led, 37-29, at halftime but KO outscored the Raiders, 46-32, over the last 24 minutes.
Waynesburg is 1-4.
In other games: South Fayette was a 65-46 winner over Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-AAAA. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
