South Side Beaver 67, Waynesburg 59:
South Side beaver overcame a halftime deficit by holding Waynesburg to eight third-quarter points and then held on for a 67-59 victory over the Raiders in the consolation round of the Avella Stocking Stuffer tournament.
South Side (3-5) trailed 27-26 at halftime but outscored Waynesburg 18-8 in the pivotal third quarter.
Jake McDougal led three SSB players in doduble figures with 25 points. Logan English scored nine of 13 points in the fourth quarter, when the Rams made 12 of 16 free throws. Brandon Barber also scored 13 points.
Waynesburg’s Darton McIntire scored a game-high 33 points that included five three-pointers. Lucas Garber had 18 points including 11 in the first half.
Waynesburg (1-7) will play in the seventh-place game at 1:30 p.m. today.
California 64, Jefferson-Morgan 33:
California built a 30-point first-half lead and crusied to a 64-33 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in the consolation game of the bentworth tournament.
The win moved california back above the .500 mark at 5-4. The Trojans led 24-10 after one quarter and 45-15 at halftime.
Ben Wilson scored a game-high 27 points for Cal. The Trojans also had Colin Phillips, with 14 points, and Dru Millert, with 10, score in doduble figures.
DL Garrett was the leading scorer for Jefferson-Morgan (4-5) with 18 points.
Geibel Catholic 66, Mapletown 37:
Cole Kendall scored a game-high 25 points and Geibel Catholic defeated Mapletown 66-37 in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.
Geibel improved its record to 2-6 with both wins coming over Mapletown (0-8).
The Maples trailed by only 26-22 at halftime but Geibel used a 24-8 advantage in the third quarter to break open the game.
Richie Cacurak led Mapletown in scoring with 10 points.
Avonworth 55, Fort Cherry 51:
Fort Cherry senior forward Ryhan Culberson scored 32 points, including the 1,000th of his career, but the Rangers were edged by Avonworth, 55-51, in the semifinals of the Avella tournament.
Culberson also had nine rebounds and five steals. Fort Cherry (4-4) will play in the tournament’s third-place game at 5:30 p.m. today.
Girls results
West Greene 88, Bentworth 18: Undefeated West Greene scored 41 first-quarter points and cruised to an 88-18 victory over Bentworth in the championship game of the Bearcats’ tournament.
West Greene (8-0) led 41-3 after one quarter and 63-8 at halftime.
Tournament MVP McKenna Lampe led the Pioneers with a game-high 18 points. Madison Lampe followed with 17 points, Kaitlyn Rizor tallied 14 and Elizabeth Brudnock and Savannah Pettit each scored 10 points
Bentworth (2-6) received 10 points from Jenna Vito.
The Lampe sisters, Rizor and Vito each were named to the all-tounamernt team along with Abby Antil of Mapletown, which won the consolation game.
South Fayette 64, Bethel Park 55:
South Fayette wiped away a 16-point halftime deficit with a big second-half comeback and defeated Bethel Park 64-55 in the championship game of the Black Hawks’ tournament.
Sam Kosmacki led the stunning comeback by the Lions (4-3) by scoring a game-high 18 points. Skylar Aitken followed with 15 points and Maura Castelucci had 13 as South Fayette extended its winning streak to three games.
Bethel Park (5-3) led 35-19 at halftime but was held to 20 points in the second half. Kamryn Lach led the Black Hawks with 15 points.
Belle Vernon 57, Fairmont (W.Va.) 54:
Caitlyn Trombley had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, leading Belle Vernon to 57-54 victory over previously undefeated Fairmont (W.Va.) in the California University Hoopfest at the Convocation Center.
Fairmont (7-1) led 25-23 at halftime but Belle Vernon roared back to take a 43-40 lead after three quarters. The Leopards protected the lead at the free-throw line, where they were 26 of 36 in the game. Trombley made eight of 10 free throws.
Kelsey Green also had a big game for Belle Vernon, scoring 16 points.
Hoby Faulkner and Angela Delorenzo each scored 10 points for Fairmont.
Belle Vernon will play Canon-McMillan today at 4 p.m.
Abington 66, Trinity 52:
Kasondra Brown scored a game-high 25 points and Abington used a fourth-run run to pull away and defeat Trinity 66-52 in a semifinal game in the Wright Automotive North Allegheny tournament.
Trinity, which lost for only the second time in nine games, trailed 33-26 at halftime and 49-42 after three quarters. The Hillers were able to pull to within two points in the fourth quarter before Abington went on a game-clinching run.
Riley DeRubbo led Trinity in scoring with 18 points and Alayna Cappelli had 14.
Jordan Allen scored 14 points and Sam Brusha had 13.
Trinity will play defending Ohio state champion Gilmour Academy in the third-place game at 4 p.m. today.
Hoover (Ala.) 63, Chartiers-Houston 21:
Hoover, Ala., a ranked in the top-20 high school teams in the nation, rolled to a 63-21 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a matchup of teams nicknamed the Lady Bucs in the Rock Holiday Classic at Orlando, Fla.
Miya Kimber scored 19 points, Skyla Knight 15 and Ebony Williams 10 for Hoover.
Alexa Williamson led the Bucs with 12 points.
Chartiers-Houston will play in the tournament’s third-place game at 3:30 p.m. today against Whitmer, Ohio.
California 51, Monessen 27:
Bailey Vig scoredf 27 points and became the fourth California girls basketball player with 1,000 career points as the Trojans defeated Monessen 51-27 in the California tournament.
Vig’s scoring helped California (5-2), which has won three in a row, pulled away in the second half after leading by only 20-13 at halftime.
Qitarah Hardison was the leading scorer for Monessen (1-7) with nine points.
California will play Charleroi at 7 p.m. tonight and Monessen faces South Allegheny at 3 p.m.
Geibel Catholic 49, Waynesburg 45:
Gillian and Gabby Yourish combined for 40 points as Geibel Catholic held off a second-half charge and edged Waynesburg 49-45 in the opening round of the Geibel tournament.
Geibel (3-3) led 29-20 at halftime but Waynesburg mounted a late charge that fell four points shy of forcing overtime. Gillian Yourish led Geibel with 27 points, which included four three-pointers.
Elle Hampson and Rachel Elsenheimer each scored eight points to lead a balanced Waynesburg attack. The Raiders will play in the 6 p.m. consolation game tonight.
McGuffey 37, Burgettstown 31:
Abby Donnelly scored 12 points and McGuffey defeated Burgettstown 37-31 in the Highlanders’ holiday tournament.
McGuffey (3-6) led 14-10 at halftime and managed to maintain an advantage through the second half. Mikalah Maxwell also scored in double figures for the Highlanders with 10 points.
Burgettstown fell to 3-5.
