Smith’s buzzer beater lifts Cal men past Seton Hill
GREENSBURG – Cordell Smith hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift California to a 69-68 PSAC-West men’s basketball win Saturday over Seton Hill.
Smith’s three-pointer, one of 13 made by the Vulcans in the game, came after Seton Hill’s Noah Davis missed the second of two free throws to give the Griffins (8-10, 11-11) a 68-66 lead.
Luca Andjusic scored 17 points, hitting five three-pointers, while Robel Teckel had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Vulcans (5-12, 8-15), who trailed most of the game.
Smith had 12 points and nine assists and Nick Miller 11 points for California, which also got 17 rebounds from Tony Richardson.
Noah Davis scored 18, Nathan Davis 13 and Manny Joshua 12 for Seton Hill, which also got eight rebounds and seven blocked shots from Spencer Casson.
Washington & Jefferson 72, Bethany 61: Mike Zappala scored 22 points as Washington & Jefferson won for the second time in three games, beating Bethany, 72-61, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Jonathan Devito added 16 points, Sean Stinelli 12 and Bryan Graytok 11 for the Presidents (3-13, 3-20), who opened the season with 16 consecutive losses.
Andrew Williams had 13 points and Calique Jones and Chaice Truex 11 points each for Bethany (8-8, 13-10).
Thomas More 95, Waynesburg 56: Five players scored in double digits, led by Ryne Callahan’s 23 points, as Thomas More topped Waynesburg, 95-56, in a PAC game.
Austin Young had 21 points, Damion King 16 and Simon Clifford and Gavin Jamison 11 points each for the Saints (13-3, 17-6), who shot 52.5 percent from the floor, including making 15 of 33 three-pointers.
Marcus Wallace had 11 points and Timmy Kaiser 10 for the Yellow Jackets (4-12, 6-17).
California 71, Seton Hill 62: Mikki Glenn scored 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter as fourth-ranked California broke open what was a 1-point game entering the fourth quarter to defeat Seton Hill, 71-62, in a women’s PSAC-West game Saturday afternoon.
The Vulcans (16-1, 22-1) overcame a poor shooting day (40 percent) to pick up the win by recording 18 offensive rebounds.
Precious Martin had six of those en route to a double-double, scoring 21 points with 10 rebounds. Shatara Parsons had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with 14 points, while Glenn had six steals and blocked three shots.
Chrisianna Green scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds for Seton Hill (10-8, 14-10), which also got 11 points each from Jenna Kaufman and Alexandria Deep. Kaufman also had 10 rebounds.
Washington & Jefferson 89, Bethany 86, 2OT: Taylor Cortazzo scored a career-high 35 points and five steals as Washington & Jefferson held on to beat Bethany, 89-86, in a double overtime Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
The Presidents trailed 66-63 when Danni Medovich was fouled while shooting a three-pointer with 1 second remaining in regulation. She made all three free throws to send the game to overtime.
Bethany’s Hayley Holenka then hit a three-pointer with 4 seconds remaining in the first overtime to force a second extra period.
McGuffey graduate Sammie Weiss made two free throws in the second OT period to pull Bethany (9-7, 11-12) within one point at 87-86 with 25 seconds remaining, but Medovich made two free throws and Nichole Ricketts made one to preserve the win for the Presidents (13-3, 16-7).
Fort Cherry graduate Rachel Bellhy added 20 points and 10 rebounds for W&J, while Medovich scored 11 points.
Holenka had 35, including making eight three-pointers, Weiss 25 and Kelsea Daughery 10 for Bethany. Daugherty also had 11 rebounds, while Weiss had 10.
Thomas More 89, Waynesburg 56: Madison Temple’s 25 points helped Thomas More to an 89-56 win over Waynesburg, clinching the PAC regular season title.
Nikki Kiernan added 15 points and Shelby Rupp added 10 for the second-ranked Saints (16-0, 23-0), who led 29-12 after one quarter.
Katie Gehlmann had 20 points for Waynesburg (9-7, 13-10), which got nine rebounds from Avella graduate Mackenna Drazich and nine points and eight rebounds from Chartiers-Houston graduate Addy Knetzer.
