Four-run inning beats Cal
Despite allowing runs in only one inning, the No. 24-ranked California University women’s softball team lost 4-1 to Rollins (Fla.) Sunday morning in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla.
California finishes the season-opening event with a 2-3 record. Rollins, which advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals last year, improves to 5-4.
Rollins pitcher Grace Street allowed one unearned run, seven hits and two walks.
In the top of the fifth, Cal’s Kaylyn Roose reached on an error, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and groundout, and scored on Emily Price’s single.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rollins scored four runs only two hits. The Tars drew a pair of walks before a single through the middle tied the score at 1-1. A fielder’s choice loaded the bases and a walk gave Rolling a 2-1 lead. Center fielder Chelsea Reed then delivered a two-run single to make it 4-1.
Cal is idle for nearly two weeks, returning to action Feb. 25 with a doubleheader at Urbana.
