Avella falls to St. Joseph’s

FOX CHAPEL – St. Joseph’s turned up the pressure on Avella in the opening round of the WPIAL Class A high school girls basketball playoffs Saturday at Fox Chapel High School, forcing 30 turnovers and handing the Eagles a 68-33 season-ending loss.

St. Joseph’s (16-7) opened the game in a full-court trap that the Eagles (11-12) had issues handling throughout the opening 16 minutes of the game as they turned the ball over 24 times, falling behind 46-14.

Avella finished with 30 turnovers in the game.

Alex Jones scored all 19 of her points in that first-half barrage, while Gia Angelo added 13 points, 11 of which came in the first two quarters.

Bailey Lis led Avella with 11 points.
