Boys basktball: Culberson, Brown lead Fort Cherry past Frazier
Ryhan Culberson and Devon Brown dominated play under the basket and Fort Cherry remained undefeated in Section 2-AA with an 85-70 high school boys basketball victory over host Frazier Friday night.
Culberson and Brown combined for 56 points and 29 rebounds, which were more than enough for the Rangers to improve to 4-0 in the section and 9-2 overall.
Culberson scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as section-leading Fort Cherry (4-0, 9-2) won its seventh in a row. Brown scored 22 points and dominated on the boards by snagging a game-high 19 rebounds.
Paul Nimal also hit double figures for FC with 10 points. The Rangers trailed 24-16 after one quarter, then scored 54 points over the next two quarters to take a 70-52 advantage.
Josh Cox, with 19 points, was the leading scorer for Frazier (2-1, 3-6), which suffered its first section loss.
Canon-McMillan 67, Bethel Park 51: Canon-McMillan scored the game’s first nine points and never trailed en route to a 67-51 victory over host Bethel Park in a Class 6-A Section 2 game.
The Big Macs (1-1, 8-2) extended their winning streak to six games. C-M led 22-5 after one quarter and 38-14 at halftime.
Britton Beachy led a balanced Canon-Mac attack with a game-high 19 points. Jake Davey followed in the scoring column with 13 points, Carson Miller had 12 and Elliott Waller 10.
Ryan Meis led Bethel Park (0-3, 4-7) with 14 points and Alex Mullen had 10.
Burgettstown 58, Beth-Center 47: Robert Dupain and Reed Reitter combined for 31 points and Burgettstown defense shut down host Beth-Center in the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils pulled away for a 58-47 victory in a Section 4-AAA game.
Burgettstown (1-2, 3-6) led 33-23 at halftime before B-C closed to within 46-42 after three quarters. The Bulldogs, however, were held to only five points in the fourth quarter as they dropped to 0-4 in section play and 4-6 overall.
Dupain led Burgettstown with 16 points and Reitter followed with 15. Andrew White scored 16 points to lead B-C. J.J. Green contributed 13 points and Nick Pryor had 11.
Findlay Prep 99, First Love Christian Academy 78: Lamine Diane led five Findlay Prep players in double figures as the Pilots defeated First Love Christian Academy 99-78 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the two-day Cancer Research Classic at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Findlay (18-0), located in Henderson, Nev., is the No. 2-ranked prep team in the nation and had 10 of its former players make it to the NBA in the last eight years. Since the 2007-08 season, Findlay Prep has a 298-19 record.
Findlay broke open a close game in the second half after leading 51-42 at halftime. DePaul recruit Justin Roberts scored 19 points, Kentucky recruit P.J. Washington and Chris Giles each had 16 points and Jake Schwietz 11 for the Pilots, who shot 57 percent.
David Collins kept First Love (8-2) within striking distance for much of the game by scoring a game-high 30 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Samson George had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, Darrell Brock had 13 points and four assists and Dylan Morrison came off the bench to score 10 points that included four dunks in the first quarter.
Ringgold 85, Albert Gallatin 40: Dakota Browning scored 21 points and Ringgold pulled away in the second half, scoring 53 points, as the Rams defeated Albert Gallatin, 85-40, in a Class 5-A Section 1 win.
Ryan Varley added 19 points and Jake Mayer had 15 for the Rams (2-1, 7-5), who outscored AG (0-4, 3-8), 53-16 in the second half.
Nate Bricker’s 16 points led the Colonials.
Chartiers-Houston 80, Bentworth 45: A.J. Myers scored 29 points as Chartiers-Houston jumped out to a 53-25 halftime lead and defeated Bentworth, 80-45, in a Section 2-AA game.
Cam Hanley added 20 points for the Bucs (3-0, 8-3), who also got 13 points from Zach Southern.
Steve Harner scored 19 points to lead the Bearcats (1-3, 5-5), while Levi Jordan added 12 in the losing effort.
Peters Township 66, Trinity 57: Michael Cortese scored 22 points and Peters Township jumped out to a 42-23 halftime lead on its way to a 66-57 non-section win over Trinity.
Conor Patterson added 14 points and Dax Plosinka added 11 for the Indians, who improved to 10-2.
Joey Koroly had 18 points, Zach Ecker 12 and Dylan Kern 10 for the Hillers (5-5).
McGuffey 59, Waynesburg 25: Sean Edlis scord all 21 of his points in the first half as McGuffey grabbed a 37-7 halftime lead en route to a 59-25 Section 3-AAAA win over Waynesburg.
Trent Belleville and Chase Miller added 10 points each for McGuffey (4-0, 10-1), with Belleville also contributing 14 rebounds.
Darton McIntire led Waynesburg (0-4, 1-9) with 13 points.
Avella 60, Mapletown 25: Austin Lis scored 14 points to lead Avella to a 60-25 Section 2-A win over Mapletown.
Sean Willard added 11 points for the Eagles (1-1, 2-6), who opened the second half on a 20-4 run.
Mapletown falls to 0-2, 0-10.
South Fayette 61, Uniontown 59: Noah Plack scored 16 points and South Fayette slowed clamped down on Uniontown in the fourth quarter as the Lions came from behind to win a Section 3-AAAA game over the Raiders, 61-59.
South Fayette (4-0, 5-2) trailed, 55-52 entering the fourth quarter but limited Uniontown (1-3, 4-4) to four points in the final eight minutes.
Matt Thomas added 14 and Cam Garland 11 in the winning effort.
Lorenzo Odom scored 16 to pace Uniontown.
California 64, Carmichaels 47: Kass Taylor had 21 points as California evened its Section 2-AA record with a 64-47 win over Carmichaels.
John DeFranco added 11 points for the Trojans (2-2, 10-2), who jumped out to a 30-12 halftime lead.
Liam Shea had 15 points and Cody Brown 11 for Carmichaels (0-3, 5-5)
