Girls basketball: California gets defensive, beats Beth-Center
The California High School girls basketball team used defense to get its 10th win of the season, defeating Beth-Center 34-24 in a Section 3-AA game Friday night.
Cal (3-1, 10-1) held Beth-Center to two points in the first quarter and didn’t allow the Bulldogs to hit double-figure points in any quarter. The loss dropped B-C to 1-3 in section and 4-5 overall.
Dominique Gaston led California with 10 points. Kinlee Whited took game scoring honors with 11 points for Beth-Center, which has lost four in a row after winning four of its first five.
Carmichaels 48, Bentworth 42: Megan Walker scored 17 points as Carmichaels overcame a poor shooting night at the free throw line to hold off Bentworth, 48-42, in a Section 3-AA high school girls basketball game.
Kaitlyn Wilson added 14 points for the Mikes (1-3, 5-7), who won despite making just 14 of 39 free throw attempts.
Grace Marchezak led Bentworth (0-4, 0-10) with 16 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 34, Monessen 17: Jamie Lawrence and Erin Confortini scored seven points each as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Monessen, 34-17, in a Section 2-A game.
The Rockets improve to 1-1 in section and 5-7 overall. Monessen falls to 0-2, 0-12.
