Down 26, Prexies come back to stun Canon-McMillan
BURGETTSTOWN – Matt Popeck scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half as Washington overcame a 26-point first-half deficit to come back and beat Canon-McMillan, 75-67, at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic in a boys basketball game Saturday.
Isaiah Robinson also had a big second half for the Prexies (6-3), scoring 12 of his 19 points in the second half as Washington erased a 22-point halftime lead by outscoring the Big Macs 51-21 over the final two quarters.
Jacob Swartz also had 10 points for Washington, including the 1,000th point of his career in the second quarter. Swartz, a transfer from Laurel Highlands, needed 11 points coming into the game and surpassed the milestone in the second quarter.
Canon-Millan (8-3) came out red hot in the game, hitting eight three-pointers in the first quarter to grab a 25-14 lead. The Big Macs hit 11 three-pointers in the first half and 14 in the game.
But Washington went to a full-court trap in the second half, slowing Canon-McMillan’s offense.
Kenyan Lewis had 15 points to lead the Big Macs, all on three-pointers, while R.J. Bell added 14 points, Carson Miller 13 and Britton Beachy 10.
McGuffey 71, Frazier 47: McGuffey overcame a slow start to beat Frazier, 71-47, at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.
Trent Belleville had 16 points, Colin Chapman 15 and Sean Edlis 14 points and seven assists for the Highlands (11-1), who trailed 12-9 after one quarter.
Justin Novak and J.D. Celaschi led Frazier (3-8) with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Burgettstown 68, Weirton, W.Va. 61: Max Shaw scored eight of his 12 points during a 20-11 third-quarter run by Burgettstown as the Blue Devils rallied to beat Weirton, W.Va., 68-61, at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.
Burgettstown (4-6) trailed 31-23 but Shaw helped the Blue Devils grab a 43-42 lead over Weirton (0-10) entering the fourth quarter.
Ryan Lounder scored 15 points, Reed Reitter 11 and Brad McLaughlin 10 for Burgettstown.
Matt Anderson had a game-high 20 points for Weirton.
Rochester 58, Avella 52: Chad Meny’s 23 points helped Rochester hold off a strong challenge from Avella, 58-52, in a non-section game.
Mahlik Strozler added 15 points for Rochester (8-2), which led 32-24 at the half, only to see the Eagles (2-7) trim that advantage to 41-40 entering the fourth quarter.
Garrett Geresti had 14 points, Kevin Painter 13 and Sean Willard 11 for Avella.
