Thomas More stops W&J in battle for PAC lead
Nikki Kiernan and Abby Owings combined for 53 points and undefeated Thomas More maintained its grip on first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference by defeating Washington & Jefferson 93-70 Saturday afternoon in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Thomas More (8-0, 15-0), which is ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, forged a 12-point lead in the first quarter. After W&J closed to within eight, the Saints went on a 20-8 run to start the second quarter and led 46-25 at halftime.
The loss dropped W&J’s record to 6-2 in the PAC and 9-6 overall.
Kiernan had game-highs of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Owings had 24 points and eight assists, and Kirsten Paul had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Madison Temple also scored 12 points for Thomas More, which shot 54 percent.
Danielle Parker led four W&J players in double figures with 22 points. Amirah Moore had 14 points and five assists, and Taylor Cortazzo and Mya Gordon each had 12 points.
California 83, Seton Hill 68: California, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, scored 50 second-half points as the Vulcans pulled away for an 83-68 win over Seton Hill in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans put five players in double figures led by Seairra Barrett with a game-high 21 points. She also had six rebounds and four steals.
Miki Glenn scored 18 points, Shatara Parsons had 13, Lana Doran 12 and Emily Suckling came off the bench to score 11. The Vulcans improved to 10-1 in the PSAC and 16-1 overall. Seton Hill fell to 6-5, 10-7.
Jenna Kaufman paced the Griffins with 20 points.
Cal led 33-31 at halftime and took control of the game by opening the second half with a 12-0 run. Glenn scored the final six points in the spurt.
Waynesburg 70, Geneva 53: Forwards Addy Knetzer and Haley Delaney each had a double-double in points and rebounds and keyed a big second quarter that carried Waynesburg to a 70-53 victory over visiting Geneva in a PAC game.
Knetzer scored 19 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, and Delaney followed with 15 points and 10 rebounds as Waynesburg improved to 5-3 in the conference and 9-6 overall.
Waynesburg led 16-15 after the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets then took control of the game by scoring the first 15 points of the second quarter to open a 31-15 lead. The run started with three consecutive three-pointers by Delaney and Knetzer followed with two baskets.
Anna Bartman came off the bench to score 12 points for Waynesburg.
Geneva’s Callie Ford scored a game-high 24 points. The Golden Torandoes are 1-7 in the PAC and 4-11 overall.
California 69, Seton Hill 61: Tony Richardson and Cordell Smith each tossed in 11 points, California scored 21 points off turnovers and the Vulcans won their second consecutive PSAC West Division home game, defeating Seton Hill, 69-61.
Cal (2-9, 5-12) made six of its nine three-point field goals in the first half, when it forged a 41-30 lead. The Vulcans pushed the lead to as many as 19 points at 67-48 before Seton Hill (4-7, 7-8) closed the game on a 13-2 run.
The Vulcans had balanced scoring as seven players had at least six points. Richardson scored his 11 points on only five shots. Jay Tucker had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Seton Hill’s Noah Davis and Damjan Sredanovic each had 13 points.
Geneva 74, Waynesburg 72: Chase Vaudrin broke a tie by making two free throws with four seconds remaining to give Geneva a 74-72 victory over Waynesburg in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Vaudrin’s free throws came after Waynesburg, which trailed by 14 points at halftime, had tied the score on a pair of free throws by Jon Knab with 24 seconds left.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 70-63 with 55 seconds remaining but Knab made a three-pointer that cut Geneva’s lead to 72-70 and, after a Golden Torandoes turnover, he made the two free throws that tied the score.
Knab finished with a game-high 24 points. Marcus Wallace had 16 points for the Yellow Jackets (2-6, 4-11), who have lost six in a row.
Ethan Moose led Geneva (4-4, 7-8) with 19 points. Vaudrin had 13.
Thomas More 82, Washington & Jefferson 72: Washington’s Jefferson’s young team has been getting closer but that first victory of the season remains elusive.
The Presidents made a school-record 17 three-point field goals at Thomas More but the Saints overcame the Presidents’ long-range baskets by shooting 51 percent from the field en route to an 82-72 victory in a PAC game.
W&J attempted 38 three-pointers, which ties the school single-game record.
The win keeps Thomas More (7-1, 11-4) in first place in the conference.
Thomas More had five players score in double figures, led by Simon Clifford’s 18 points and Damion King’s 17.
Sean Stinelli scored a game-high 23 points for W&J and made seven of 12 shots from three-point range. Stinelli had five three-pointers in the second half, after Thomas More had opened a 46-32 lead by intermission.
Mike Zappala followed with 11 points and Sven Zepic had 10 for W&J (0-8, 0-15).
