Boys basketball roundup: Monessen beats Clairton in 2-A showdown
Jaden Altomore and Justice Rice combined for 53 points Tuesday night to power Monessen to a 77-63 win over Clairton in a battle of undefeated teams in Section 2-A.
Altomore scored 27 and Rice 26 for the Greyhounds (5-0, 8-4), who hit 27 of 44 free throw attempts.
Keishawn wright scored 22 for the Bears (4-1, 7-4), who trailed 42-30 at halftime. Don Solomon added 12 points. Clairton made 13 of 23 free throws.
McGuffey 54, South Park 35: Trent Belleville and Colin Chapman combined for 44 points to power McGuffey to a 54-35 victory over South Park in a Section 3 game in Class 4-A.
Belleville and Chapman each scored 22 points for the Highlanders (6-1, 13-2), who held the Eagles to 14 points in the middle two quarters.
Joey Torris had 18 for South Park (3-4, 5-9).
Burgettstown 54, SS Beaver 51: Burgettstown forged a 16-point lead in the first half and held off a late charge by South Side Beaver to defeat the Rams 54-51 in a Section 4-AAA game on the Blue Devils’ home court.
Robert Dupain led Burgettstown (2-4, 5-8) by scoring 15 points. He helped the Blue Devils to a 30-14 advantage after two quarter. SSB (1-5, 4-10) closed to within 38-28 after three quarters and scored 23 points over the final eight minutes.
Max Shaw scored 11 points for Burgettstown and Brad McLaughlin hit double figures with 10.
Jake McDougal, with a game-high 23 points, and Jared Conti, with 18, did the majority of SSB’s scoring.
California 71, Frazier 45: California won its third in a row, routing visiting Frazier 71-45 in Section 2-AA.
Cal, which received a forfeit win earlier in the day from Brownsville for using an ineligible player, improved to 4-2 in the section and 12-2 overall. The Trojans led by only two points after one quarter but outscored Frazier (3-3, 4-10) 37-18 over the next two quarters.
Kass Taylor led a balanced California offense with 20 points. Johnny DeFranco followed with 17 points, Jaycee Conaway had 14 and Ben Wilson 10.
Josh Cox was Frazier’s leading scorer with 14 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 61, Carmichaels 51: Liam Shea scored 18 points and Jefferson-Morgan broke a seven-game losing streak with a 61-51 win over Carmichaels in Section 2-AA.
Jacob Lowry added 14 points for J-M (1-4, 3-9).
D.L. Garrett scored a game-high 22 points for the Rockets (0-6, 5-8), who have lost six straight.
Brownsville 60, Beth-Center 51: Brownsville outscored Beth-Center, 22-7, in the third quarter on the way to a 60-51 win over Beth-Center in Section 4-AAA.
Shandon Marshall led the Falcons (2-4, 6-8) with 18 points.
J.J. Green scored 16 points and Andrew White 13 for B-C (0-6, 4-8).
West Greene 60, Avella 27: West Greene held Avella to single digits in all four quarters to grab a 60-27 victory in Section 2-A.
Kolton Rush scored 22 points for the Pioneers (3-2, 8-4). Nathan Brudnock tossed in 13 and Craig Weaver 12.
Avella fell to 3-10, 1-4 in the section.
Uniontown 87, Waynesburg 51: A balanced scoring attack paced Uniontown to an 87-51 win over Waynesburg in Section 3-AAAA.
Kamron Fitzgerald led the way with 16 points for Uniontown (2-5, 5-6). Lorenzo Oden and Anthony Brown each scored 14.
Darton McIntire had a game-high 22 points for Waynesburg (0-7, 1-13).
