Burgettstown wins subsection title; Teasdale gets 100th victory
Taking two of the final three bouts, Burgettstown was able to defeat Chartiers-Houston 39-33 Wednesday night in a Class AA Section 1-A match.
With the win, the Blue Devils are the first-place team in the subsection and will host the section team tournament next Wednesday.
Burgettstown’s Ethan Brothers (195) pinned Donald Green at 1:05 was followed up by a Riley Kemper (220) 3-1 decision over T.J.Johnston, giving the Blue Devils enough distance to be unaffected by forfeiting the heavyweight bout.
Chartiers-Houston, whoichsurrendered the first five bouts on the night, tried to surmount a comeback by winning five of the next six matches highlighted by pins from Jacob Ognibene (152),Robert Hall (170) and Nick Kalafatis (182).
Peters Township 52, Ringgold 18: Peters Township stayed unbeaten in the section after four consecutive pins in the first five bouts gave way to a 52-18 rout over Ringgold in Class AAA Section 2-B.
The Indians won the subsection title.
PT’s Coltin Jezioro (132) ignited the flurry of pins with a bout that lasted only 22 seconds as he defeated Shelby Rhoades.
Brandan Matthews (138), Dan Florentino (145) and Jake Hurley (152) also earned pins in successive fashion for the Indians.
Dan Levine added on for PT with a 10-2 major decision
The lone pins Ringgold earned was from Evan Higgs (220) over Grant Nelson at 1:33 and Grant Gerard (Hvy) over William Fetty at 1:06.
Jefferson-Morgan 48, West Greene 18: Jefferson-Morgan’s two-time defending PIAA champion Gavin Teasdale (126) started the match by earning his 100th career victory as the Rockets defeated West Greene 48-18, in Class AA Section 2A.
Teasdale pinned Joey Chapman at 1:05, becoming the fastest in school history to reach the 100-victory milestone.
Aaron Mylan (145) was the only other J-M wrestler with a pin.
Andrew Lipton (160) and Brock Bedillion (Hvy) each won their bouts by fall for West Greene.
Canon-McMillan 62, Trinity 9: Canon-McMillan, which had already clinched first place in Class AA Section 4-A, rolled to a 62-9 victory over visiting Trinity.
After the score was 6-6, Canon-McMillan reeled off eight consecutive bout wins, including falls by Kenny Hayman (112), Tony Mastrangelo (126), Tim Hritsko (138), Dimitri Pihiou (145) and Garrett Nijenhuis (152). Blaze Kansco (170) and Bryan Milligan (182) also had falls for the Big Macs.
Waynesburg 54, Central Catholic 27: Waynesburg had no trouble disposing of visiting Central Catholic 54-27 on Senior Night in Class AA Section 4-A.
Waynesburg took four forfeits and combined them with five pins to finish in second place in the subsection behind Canon-McMillan.
Caleb Morris (132), Caleb Stephenson (145), Trey Howard (152), Kyle Homet (171) and Luke Robinson (180) had the falls for Waynesburg with Homet needing only 44 seconds to pin his opponent.
Bentworth 49, Mapletown 30: Bentworth earned an opportunity to wrestle for fifth place in the section and make it into the WPIAL team tournament by defeating Class AA Section 2-A opponent Mapletown, 49-30.
After falling behind early with three Mapletown pins in the first four bouts, split up by a 21-9 major decision from Bentworth’s Carter Riskey (152) over Kevin Hayes, the Bearcats won eight bouts in a row to take control.
Dejohn Williams (126) Johnathan Vargo (182), Ashton Lopez (220) and Dominic Daniels (Hvy) all earned pins for Bentworth.
With the loss, Mapletown is eliminated from team competition.
