California women move up to No. 6 in rankings, rout IUP
Junior forward Seairra Barrett scored 27 points Wednesday night and California rolled to a 79-52 victory over host Indiana in a PSAC West Division game.
Cal (11-1, 17-1), which moved up to No. 6 in the NCAA Division II rankings that were released earlier in the day, played one of its best games of the season. The Vulcans shot 48 percent, forced 29 IUP turnovers that were turned into 33 points and held the Crimson Hawks without a three-point field goal.
Barrett made 12 of 18 shots and also had five rebounds. Point guard Miki Glenn had another big game with 15 points, nine steals and seven assists. Lana Doran had 11 points and Shatara Parsons 10.
Cal led 17-10 after one quarter and 40-18 at halftime. The Vulcans had a 19-0 run that began with 3:50 left in the opening quarter and extended until the four-minute mark of the second quarter.
Brittany Robinson was the only player to score in double figures for IUP (10-2, 12-4). She had 14 points.
Cal’s win keeps the Vulcans tied with Mercyhurst for second place in the West. The Vulcans and Lakers are one game behind Edinboro (12-0, 16-2), which defeated Clarion. IUP drops to fourth place in the division.
Men’s results
Waynesburg 92, Washington & Jefferson 84: Jon Knab scored 20 points and Nate Gearhart came off the bench to contribute 18 and spark a pivotal second-half run as Waynesburg rallied to defeat Washington & Jefferson 92-84 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Henry Memorial Center.
Gearhart started a 14-0 run by Waynesburg with a three-pointer and capped the spurt with two more shots from behind the arc as the Yellow Jackets turned a 63-53 deficit into a 67-63 advantage with 10:11 remaining.
Waynesburg (3-6, 5-11), which ended a six-game losing streak, never trailed again, though W&J pulled to within 82-80 with 4:24 to play. The Presidents (0-9, 0-16) did not make another field goal until the game’s final five seconds.
Waynesburg protected the lead by making 19 of 23 free throws.
Marcus Wallace scored 11 points, and Timmy Kaiser and Kendall Paige each had 10 for Waynesburg, which made 11 three-pointers.
W&J’s Brian Lindquist scored a game-high 24 points and was 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. Jonathan Devito and Sean Stinelli each had 17 points and Brian Graytok had 13 for W&J, which had 11 second-half turnovers.
Indiana 78, California 65: Anthony Glover scored 20 points, making 8 of 9 shots from the field, and Indiana defeated California 78-65 in a PSAC West Division game.
IUP, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, improved to 11-1 in the conference and 16-2 overall. The Crimson Hawks led 41-34 at halftime and finished the game with 27 points off 18 California turnovers. The Vulcans dropped to 2-10 in the PSAC and 5-13 overall.
Tony Richardson led Cal with 16 points, Logan Andjusic had 13 and Rashawn Browne had 11.
