Chartiers-Houston moves closer to section title
Alexa Williamson scored eight of her 21 points in a decisive third-quarter run as Chartiers-Houston overcame a slow start to defeat Our Lady of Sacred Heart, 53-34, in a key Section 1-AA girls basketball game Thursday night.
OLSH (6-2, 11-5) jumped out to a 12-8 lead after one quarter but the Bucs (8-0, 12-2) stormed back to take a 22-16 halftime lead. Section-leading Chartiers-Houston then took control of the game with a 19-4 run in the third quarter.
Jala Walker added 12 points for the Bucs.
Jocelin Nagy and Ashley Norling led OLSH with nine points each.
Trinity 41, Connellsville 34: Free throws win games and section-leading Trinity proved as much during its 41-34 victory over host Connellsville.
Trinity was 12-for-12 at the free-throw line in the game, and made all six of its attempts in the pivotal fourth quarter, as the Hillers remained undefeated in Class 5-A Section 3.
The Hillers (7-0, 14-1) led 23-18 at halftime but Connellsville (5-2, 7-8) outscored the Hillers 12-7 in the third quarter to tie the score at 30-30. Trinity then held Connellsville to a mere four points over the final eight minutes.
Sierra Kotchman was again Trinity’s leading scorer with a game-high 19 points. Madison Wiltrout led Connellsville with 14 points. The Falcons were 5-for-7 at the free-throw line.
Beth-Center 61, Frazier 53: Kinlee Whited scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Beth-Center picked up a key Section 3-AA win over Frazier.
Freshman Olivia Greco added a career-high 17 points for the Bulldogs (4-4, 7-6), who stayed within striking distance of third-place Frazier (5-3, 10-5) with the win.
Hannah Fell had 20 points and Brooke Polling 16 for the Commodores.
Peters Township 46, Baldwin 41: Isabella Mills hit a key three-pointer and Lillian Young had a pair of free throws in the closing minute to salt away the game as Peters Township edged Baldwin, 46-41, in a Class 6-A Section 3 game.
Makenna Marissa scored 15 points, while Young and Emily Konwick added 10 each for the Indians (5-1, 10-4), who finished the game on a 10-4 run.
Lauren Gilbert had 20 points for Baldwin (2-5, 7-8).
Charleroi 48, South Allegheny 26: Kaitlyn Riley’s 16 points helped Charleroi to a big 48-26 Section 2-AAA win over South Allegheny.
Maria Claybaugh added 11 points for the Cougars (5-1, 11-3), who stayed within striking distance of first-place East Allegheny in the section standings.
Alyssa Kennedy had nine points for South Allegheny (3-4, 9-5).
Washington 59, New Brighton 20: Jahlea Oakley had 14 points and Washington led 15-0 after one quarter en route to a 59-20 win over New Brighton in Section 1-AA game.
Haylea Ellis and Carly Allen added 11 points each for the Prexies (4-4, 8-7), who also opened the third quarter on an 18-1 run.
Sydney Cook had six points for New Brighton (1-7, 2-13).
California 61, Serra Catholic 27: Bailey Vig led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as California topped Serra Catholic, 61-27, in a Section 3-AA game.
Love Porter added 13 points, Jenna Miller 11 and Grace Roberts 10 for the Trojans (6-1, 14-1).
Aaliya Coleman and Gigi Madigan had eight points each for Serra (3-4, 6-6).
Fort Cherry 42, Aliquippa 30: Fort Cherry broke open a tie game in the second half with a 14-7 third-quarter run en route to a 42-30 Section 1-AA win over Aliquippa. Shannon Relihan and Abby Cooper had 12 points each for the Rangers (3-5, 6-7).
Brielle Simms scored 19 points to lead the Quips (2-6, 3-11).
Greensburg Central Catholic 62, Carmichaels 19: Brittany Stawovy had 26 points as Greensburg Central Catholic jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead en route to a 62-19 Section 3-AA victory over Carmichaels.
Anna Eisaman and Haley Moore added 11 points each for theCenturions (8-0, 10-3).
Kristina Aeschbacher led the Mikes (2-6, 6-10) with eight points.
West Allegheny 67, Canon-McMillan 58: Hannah Lindemath led four West Allegheny players in double figures with 19 points and the Indians defeated visiting Canon-McMillan 67-58 in a nonsection game.
West Allegheny, which does not have a senior on its roster, improved its record to 10-5. The Indians have won seven of their last eight games.
West Allegheny led 20-10 after one quarter and maintained an advantage the rest of the way. Melina Lynn scored 15 points for WA, Grace Faulk had 13 and Patience Ashaolu 12.
Canon-McMillan’s Izzy Allen was the game’s leading scorer with 23 points.
West Greene 74, Hundred 7: McKenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor combined for 32 points and West Greene steamrolled host Hundred (W.Va.) 74-7.
West Greene (12-2) led 33-1 after one quarter and 54-5 at halftime. Lampe scored nine of her 16 points in the big first quarter. Rizor, who also finished with 16 points, had eight in the opening quarter.
Madison Lampe, with 14 points, and Savannah Pettit, with 12, also scored in double figures for the Pioneers, who will host Winchester Thurston, the top-ranked Class A team in the WPIAL, tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Hundred’s record fell to 2-10.
Shenango 38, Burgettstown 31: Jackie Baker scored 15 points and Shenango defeated host Burgettstown 38-31 in a Section 1-AA game, snapping the Blue Devils’ five-game winning streak.
Shenango (3-5, 5-10) used a 13-3 advantage in the second quarter to take a 24-15 lead into halftime over the cold-shooting Blue Devils (5-3, 10-4).
Chaslin Hoover scored 11 points for Shenango, which won its first true road game of the season.
Kacie Prasko paced Burgettstown with 12 points and Emily Prasko followed with 10.
Jeannette 71, Bentworth 28: Olivia Sirnic scored a game-high 35 points to power Jeannette to a 71-28 victory over Bentworth in Section 3-AAA.
Sirnic scored 12 points in the second quarter, when the Jayhawks (3-5, 5-8) outscored Bentworth 23-0 to take a 38-11 lead.
Jenna Vito led Bentworth with eight points.
McGuffey 47, Jefferson-Morgan 40: Megan Gray and Mikalah Maxwell each scored 11 points and McGuffey rode a strong second quarter to a 47-40 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in a nonsection game.
McGuffey (2-12) outscored the Rockets 15-9 in the second quarter to turn a one-point deficit after one quarter into a 23-18 lead at halftime. The Highlanders did just enough offensively in the second half to protect the lead.
Jamie Lawrence led Jefferson-Morgan (7-9) with 13 points and Krista McCartney followed with 10.
