McGuffey outlasts Keystone Oaks

Sean Edlis made a jumper in the closing moments of the second overtime and McGuffey then sank a free throw with time expired after blocking a last-second shot by Keystone Oaks to hold on for a 58-55 Section 3-AAAA victory Friday night.

Colin Chapman, who scored 14 points, hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime, only to have Keystone Oaks (1-7, 2-13) return the favor after the first extra period with a late layup.

Trent Belleville scored all 17 of his points after the first half for the Highlanders (7-1, 14-2), while Edlis added 16 points. The Highlanders remain in a tie for the section lead with Belle Vernon.

Vonte Mitchell and Ryan Collins each scored 11 points for KO.

Washington 82, Brownsville 35: Matt Popeck scored 22 points and section-leading Washington used a huge first half to rout visiting Brownsville 82-35 in Section 4-AAA.

Washington (7-0, 12-3) won its eighth consecutive game and wasted no time in taking control against the Falcons. The Prexies led 29-5 after one quarter and 56-18 at halftime.

Popeck scored 15 of his points in the first half and had 22 by midway through the third quarter. He led three Prexies in double figures. Jacob Swartz scored all of his 16 points on field goals and Isaiah Robinson contributed 14 points.

Shandon Marshall led Brownsville (3-4, 7-9) with 11 points and Tyler Coddington had 10.

Trinity 80, Albert Gallatin 58:Trinity forged a double-digit lead in the first quarter and then cruised to an 80-58 victory over host Albert Gallatin a Class 5-A Section 1 game.

Trinity (5-2, 9-7) which remained within striking distance of section-leading McKeesport, led 17-3 after one quarter and 39-16 at halftime. The second half was filled with fouls and free throws as the teams combined to shoot 69 fouls shots on the night.

Joey Koroly led the Trinity offense with 23 points, Robert Nelson had a solid game with 11 points and Zach Ecker hit double figures with 10 points.

Albert Gallatin’s Tavian Mozie did not score in the first half but finished with a game-high 27 points that included a 15-for-20 performance at the free-throw line. The Colonials (0-7, 4-11) remained winless in the section.

Fort Cherry 72, Carmichaels 51: Fort Cherry broke open a close game in the second half and pulled away for a 72-51 victory over host Carmichaels in Section 2-AA.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Fort Cherry (6-1, 11-4), which pulled to within percentage points of section leader Chartiers-Houston, which was idle. Carmichaels is 0-7 in section and 5-9 overall.

Fort Cherry led 28-21 at halftime and then scored 22 points in both the third and fourth quarters.

Ryhan Cluberson and Devon Brown led Fort Cherry’s offense with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Chad Colussy followed with a 16-point performance and Nick Rogers finished with 12.

Jacob Lowry paced Carmichaels with 14 points and Liam Shea had 12.

Ringgold 61, Thomas Jefferson 59: Ringgold gave its WPIAL Class 5-A playoff hopes a boost with a 61-59 victory over visiting Thomas Jefferson in a Section 1 game.

Ringgold (3-4, 8-8) overcame a 29-20 halftime deficit by outscoring TJ 15-5 in the third quarter and then making enough free throws down the stretch to hold off a late comeback by the Jaguars. Ringgold held a double-digit lead with three minutes remaining before TJ (4-3, 9-6) mounted its final charge.

Anthony Pampena led Ringgold’s winning cause with a 23-point night. Dakota Browning followed with 16 points and Ryan Varley had 11.

Justin Farrell paced TJ with 19 points. Isaac McNeil had 11 points.

South Side Beaver 51, Beth-Center 37: South Side Beaver used its torrid free-throw shooting and 15 points from Logan Jones to overcame a two-point second quarter and defeat host Beth-Center 51-37 in Section 4-AAA.

SSB (2-5, 5-10) ended a four-game losing streak by pulling away in the second half. The Rams, who led 17-13 at halftime, made 13 of 14 free throws in the game. Jake McDougal scored 11 points and Jared Conti had 10 for the Rams.

Beth-Center’s Andrew White scored all of his game-high 18 points on six three-pointers. The Bulldogs fell to 0-7 in section and 4-9 overall.

Peters Township 71, Bethel Park 54: Conor Pederson and Dax Plosinka scored 18 points each as Peters Township kept itself in the mix in Class 6-A Section 2 with a 71-54 win over Bethel Park.

Matt Thelk and Vinnie Cortese added 11 points each for the Indians (4-3, 11-5).

Brian Mastovich led Bethel Park (0-7, 4-11) with 12 points.

Bentworth 59, Frazier 52: Steven Harner scored 10 of is 21 points during a 26-9 second quarter run by Bentworth as the Bearcats picked up a critical Section 2-AA win over Frazier.

Sam Schoedel added 16 points for Bentworth (4-4, 8-7) which moved a game ahead of Frazier (3-5, 4-13) for fourth place in the section standings.

Justin Novak led Frazier with 15 points.

Southmoreland 71, Burgettstown 52: Brandon Stone scored 19 of his 26 points in the first half as Southmoreland sprinted out to a 42-22 lead and defeated Burgettstown, 71-52, in a Section 4-AAA game.

Stone, a 6-10 junior, also went over 1,000 points in the game for the Scotties (6-1, 13-2), who also got 23 points from Tommy Pisula and 12 from Michael Moresea.

Robert Dupain scored 15 points and Garrett Dhans had 10 for Burgettstown (2-6, 5-10).
