Barrett scores 1,000th as Cal women set up showdown
Miki Glenn scored 14 points, Seairra Barrett became the 27th player in California University women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points and the Vulcans’ defense was too much for Clarion Wednesday night as Cal defeated the Golden Eagles 72-38 in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.
The win keeps California (14-1, 20-1) tied for first place in the division with Edinboro, a 62-50 winner over Mercyhurst, and sets up a showdown for the lead Saturday afternoon. The Vulcans, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, will host the Fighting Scots at 3 p.m. Edinboro dealt Cal its only loss of the season earlier this month.
Against Clarion (9-6, 12-9), Cal led by only 13-8 after one quarter and 23-14 in the second quarter before breaking the game open with a 33-8 run that made the score 56-22 in the third quarter. Clarion was held to only six points in the second quarter and 14 in the first half.
Glenn led the balanced California attack with 14 points, nine steals and seven assists. Abbey Sporio, the hero of the Vulcans’ win Saturday over Mercyhurst, scored 11 points and Shatara Parsons was in double figures with 10 points.
Barrett, a junior forward, scored eight points.
Jen Straw led Clarion with 12 points.
Wash & Jeff 75, Saint Vincent 73: Danielle Parker scored a game-high 26 points, including a jumper with 1:41 remaining that put Washington & Jefferson in the lead for good, as the Presidents edged Saint Vincent 75-73 in a key Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Henry Memorial Center.
The win moves W&J (8-3, 11-7) ahead of Saint Vincent (7-4, 10-8) in the standings.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than eight points. Saint Vincent held a 39-35 advantage at halftime but W&J battled back and took a 58-54 lead into the fourth quarter. Saint Vincent led 73-72 lead with two minutes left after Hannah Carroll, who scored 10 points, made a three-pointer.
On the next possession, Parker made her 10th field goal of the night to give W&J a 74-73 advantage. The Presidents’ Taylor Cortazzo made a free throw with four seconds remaining for the game’s final points.
Parker had a double-double as she also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Presidents’ Rachel Bellhy scored 13 points and Amirah Moore contributed 11 points and five assists.
Paige Montrose was Saint Vincent’s leading scorer with 16 points.
Waynesburg 74, Grove City 60: Kassidy O’Keefe scored 14 points, Katie Gehlmann was 12-for-12 at the free-throw line and Waynesburg used a big first half to defeat visiting Grove City 74-60 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Waynesburg (7-4, 11-7) forged a 37-21 lead at halftime and maintained the lead the rest of the way by making 21 of 27 free throws in the second half and 27 of 39 in the game. The Yellow Jackets were able to overcome a game-high 28 points by Grove City’s Lexie Arkwright.
Grove City (5-6, 9-9) led 10-2 but Waynesburg took control of the game by going on a 15-0 run. The Wolverines shot only 21 percent in the first half.
Addy Knetzer scored 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds for Waynesburg.
Men’s results
California 84, Clarion 78: Daniel Sapp led four California players in double figures with 23 points as the Vulcans won their fifth consecutive home game, 84-78 over Clarion in the PSAC’s West Division.
Cal trailed 32-31 at halftime but started the second half with a 14-1 run to take control of the game. The Vuclans led by as many as 14 in the second half and held off a late charge by Clarion (3-11, 5-14).
Luka Andjusic scored 19 points, Cordell Smith had 14 and Tony Richardson 10 for Cal in a foul-filled game that saw the teams combine to shoot 70 free throws.
Jamani Pierce led five Clarion players in double figures with 19 points.
Waynesburg 63, Grove City 45: Jon Knab and Marcus Wallace each scored 14 points and Waynesburg pulled away in the second half for a 63-45 victory over Grove City in the PAC.
Waynesburg (4-7, 6-12), which moved ahead of Grove City (3-8, 7-11) in the conference standings, led 27-23 at halftime and opened the second half by outscoring the Wolverines 15-3.
Andrew Beckman was Grove City’s leading scorer with 12 points.
Saint Vincent 76, Wash & Jeff 60: Washington & Jefferson was unable to make it two wins in a row as PAC-leading Saint Vincent pulled away in the second half and defeated the Presidents 76-60 in a PAC game.
W&J (1-10, 1-7), which defeated Geneva Saturday, was unable to overcome a slow start against Saint Vincent (10-1, 14-4). The Bearcats held W&J to only three points over the first nine minutes. The Presidents, however, closed the first half on a 13-3 run to trim Saint Vincent’s lead to 34-27. The Bearcats didn’t open a double-digit lead again until scoring seven consecutive points with less than six minutes remaining.
Tom Kromka, with 13 points, led four Saint Vincent players in double figures.
Sean Stinelli had another big game for W&J, scoring a game-high 26 points and making seven of 11 three-pointers. He was the only W&J player in double figures.
