Former Cal player in Super Bowl
California University’s football program will be represented in the Super Bowl as former Vulcans wide receiver C.J. Goodwin will be playing for the Atlanta Falcons.
Goodwin (6-3, 190), a Wheeling, W.Va., native who played at Linsly Prep, has converted to defensive back with the Falcons and also plays on special teams. In his first year with Atlanta, Goodwin was on the active roster for all but two games during the regular season and played in both the NFC Divisional and Championship games.
Goodwin made his first NFL start in Week 15 against San Francisco. He had 17 tackles (14 solo) and two pass defenses during the regular season and one tackle in each playoff game.
Goodwin is the first former Cal player to play in the Super Bowl. He was a wide receiver for the Vulcans during the 2013 season, finishing with 11 receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown plus a blocked punt. Goodwin transferred to Cal from Fairmont State.
Goodwin spent the 2014 season on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad and was cut at the end of training camp in 2015. He signed with the Falcons in November of 2015.
