Wild Things pull out squeaker over Slammers
First baseman Kane Sweeney drove in two runs and Washington relief pitchers combined for 6 2/3 shutout innings Saturday night in a 2-1 victory over the Joliet Slammers at Wild Things Park.
Sweeney gave Washington a 1-0 lead in the first inning when his single scored Justin Bohn, who had reached base with a double. Joliet took advantage of wildness by Washington starting pitcher Zack Tillery to tie the score in the third inning, but Bralin Jackson led off the bottom of fourth inning with a single and scored when Sweeney doubled, giving the Wild Things a 2-1 lead.
Relief pitcher Aaron Burns (1-0) threw 4 2/3 shutout innings to get the win and Zach Strecker got the final six outs for his 10th save.
Washington has won 11 of its last 15 games to improve its record to 25-18.
