Poor start dooms Wild Things
Evansville scored seven runs over the first two innings, then held off the Washington Wild Things, 13-8, in another slugfest in the Frontier League Sunday. Washington split two games against Evansville Saturday, winning 10-5 and losing 11-10 in extra innings.
For the second day in a row, left fielder James Harris led off the game with a home run for the Wild Things. This lead would not last long though as the Otters scored two runs in the first inning. Second baseman Josh Allen scored on a single from designated hitter Dane Philips then Philips came home after left fielder John Schultz doubled.
Evansville added five runs in the bottom of the second on a pair of two-run homers from shortstop Christopher Riopedre and
Philips and an RBI single from Schultz, giving the Otters a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, third baseman Mike Hill hit his 10th homer of the season to make it 7-2. The Wild Things made it 7-5 in the fourth as doubles from first baseman Kane Sweeney and designated hitter Brailin Jackson pushed three runs across.
Evansville made it 8-5 in the sixth on Allen’s solo home run.
Washington made it 8-7 in the seventh with a single by Brailin Jackson and triple by Hector Roa. But Evansville put the game away with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Chris Sweeney hit a two-run homer for the Wild Things in the seventh.
