After the last day of school Friday, members of the Carmichaels softball team – like many high school students – were looking forward to that first day of “summer,” where the alarm didn’t have to be set the night before.

A PIAA first-round game at 1 p.m. against Dubois Central Catholic several counties north changed those plans.

“We were originally planning to leave at 7:30 (a.m.), which would give us an hour to eat,” Carmichaels coach Dave Briggs said. “We got a call last night to not leave until 8:30. Then we got a call at 8:30 this morning and were told the site was being moved and to get on a bus to leave right away.”

Carmichaels packed up and headed for its PIAA first-round game – switched to Punxsutawney Monday morning. More than an hour into the trip, they got another phone call notifying the Mikes they wouldn’t be playing at all.

“When they switched the site, I thought for sure we were going to play,” Briggs said. “We were on Route 22, near Latrobe and Greensburg, and got a call saying we wouldn’t be able to play there.”

The Mikes, who had the most hectic start of the week, joined the rest of the local teams that qualified for the PIAA championships to have their games postponed to Tuesday because of inclement weather.

Many first-round matchups that were to be played in Western Pennsylvania were postponed, including some local teams that will be playing at a different site and time than originally planned.

Carmichaels will take on Dubois Central Catholic at 3 p.m. at Clarion-Limestone High School, following Chartiers-Houston’s opening game against Moniteau at 1 p.m.

Monessen, which was originally scheduled to play Commodore Perry at Slippery Rock University, will add more than an hour to its trip after the game was moved to Penn State Behrend in Erie at 5 p.m.

Nothing changed other than the day West Greene will play Shanksville-Stonybrook, keeping their matchup today at 3 p.m. at North Allegheny High School.

Belle Vernon was one of two Class AAAA softball games to be altered. The Leopards will still play at Hampton High School; however, their start time is bumped up to 1:30 p.m. today.

The biggest difference might be for the lone local baseball team, California, which was originally scheduled to make an hour-long trip to play Saegertown at Latrobe High School Monday. With the game being rescheduled for 11 a.m. at Neshannock High School, California will not only double their originally anticipated travel time but will have nearly twice as long a trip than District 10 runner-up Saegertown.
