SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Back-to-back home runs in the first inning from Brailin Jackson and Kane Sweeney gave the Washington Wild Things a lead it wouldn’t surrender in a 7-4 win over Schaumburg Friday night.
Jackson’s home run, which also scored leadoff hitter Rashad Brown who reached on a single, highlighted a three-run first inning for Washington.
The Wild Things answered a third- and fourth-inning rally from Schaumburg that cut the deficit to one run, 4-3, on a single from Hector Roa that scored Brown in the fifth.
Kyle Pollock and Roa added more insurance runs with solo shots, Pollock’s in the sixth inning that put Washington ahead 6-4. Roa’s home run came in the ninth.
Cameron Stanton (1-1) gave up five hits, four runs and struck out two batters through five innings to earn the win for Washington.
Schaumburg starting pitcher Aryton Costa (3-1) gave up six runs for the second consecutive start and was given the loss. Costa has allowed 19 hits in his last 11 innings.
Four Wild Things had a multi-hit game.
Zach Strecker had two strikeouts in the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season.
