High school baseball round: Canon-McMillan assured of at least share of section title

The only run Canon-McMillan and pitcher Zach Rohaley needed came in the bottom of the first inning as the Big Macs defeated Baldwin, 1-0, in a Class 6-A Section 3 game Tuesday at Wild Things Park.

With the win, the Big Macs clinched at least a share of the section title.

Rohaley pitched a complete game for C-M (9-0, 10-5), scattering three hits while striking out eight and surrendering one walk.

Rohaley led the Big Macs at the plate by going 3-for-3.

Ian Hess went 2-for-3, driving in the winning run.

Baldwin (4-6, 8-7) gave up only six hits.

• Nate Luketich pitched a five-hit shutout and drove in the game’s first run as California moved closer to the Section 1-AA title with a 2-0 victory over visiting Carmichaels.

The win was the 13th in a row for California (11-0, 14-1) and the Trojans scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Luketich hit a one-out double that drove in Alex Adams. Luketich was 2-for-3.

The only other run in the game came in the fourth inning when California scored on an error.

Luketich walked two and struck out eight, needing exactly 100 pitches for a complete game. Joel Spishock had a double for Carmichaels’ lone extra-base hit.

Brad Ruse held California to two hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings of relief. The Mikes dropped to 8-3 in section and 10-4 overall.

• Chartiers Valley scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and defeated host Trinity 14-4 in five-inning Class 5-A Section 2.

Five of Chartiers Valley’s 10 hits went for extra bases, including a triple and double by leadoff hitter Konnor Corchado, who was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI as the Colts (6-3, 8-7) closed on a playoff berth.

Tanner Hudak hit two doubles for Trinity (2-8, 4-10). Logan Defillippo and Nick Herrnberger also doubled.

• Isaac Dean hit a grand slam and winning pitcher Gage Clark struck out 10 batters as Jefferson-Morgan remained undefeated in Section 2-A with a 13-1 victory over visiting West Greene.

Jefferson-Morgan (7-0, 7-4), the only unbeaten team in section play, remained in first place and won its fourth in a row. The Rockets took control early, scoring six times in the first inning. Justin Maddish was 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Eli Rafail and Jake Broadwater each had a double for the Rockets. Isaac Dean hit his grand slam during J-M’s five-run fourth inning.

West Greene slipped to 2-7 in the section and 2-8 overall.

• Section 3-AAA-leader Waynesburg rolled to a 15-0 victory over Southmoreland in a game played at Meadowlark Park with the Scotties serving as the home team.

The win was the eighth in a row for Waynesburg (8-0, 11-1), which already has clinched a playoff berth. Southmoreland (0-10, 0-12) remains winless.

Hunter Robinson went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs to lead Waynesburg’s 14-hit attack. Winning pitcher Trey Rohanna and Ryley Metheny each doubled, and Dalton Riggenbach and Kyle Shriver both drove in two runs.

Rohanna struck out five over four innings. He combined with Ryan Braun on a two-hitter.

• Destin Weiser allowed only one unearned run in five innings of relief to help Chartiers-Houston to an 11-6 victory over Frazier in a Section 1-AA game in Perryopolis.

Chartiers-Houston (9-2, 10-4), which is in second place in the section, trailed 5-3 after two innings but took the lead with a three-run fifth.

C-H played double or nothing as Weiser, Matt Whitfield, Josh Coletti and T.J. Johnston each doubled. Johnston and Whitfield each went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Frazier is 4-7 in section and 4-9 overall, falling a game out of a playoff berth.

• Mike Pompei had five strikeouts and only allowed only one hit in his a complete-game performance as Jeannette defeated Mapletown 12-0 in a five-inning Section 2-A game.

Pompei was also productive with the bat, recording the lone extra-base hit of the game. His two hits drove in a pair of runs for Jeannette (6-2, 8-4).

The only hit for Maples (2-7, 3-10) came on a Garrett Phillips single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

• Blake McElhaney struck out eight and drove in two runs as Fort Cherry defeated Beth-Center, 7-4, in Section 1-AA.

McElhaney, along with Cade Krah and Cameron Schaub, brought the Rangers from behind with two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Each had a double for Fort Cherry (3-8, 6-9).

Beth-Center (2-9, 2-11) was paced by Hunter Bowen, who had a two-run homer in the top of the third inning.

• Rochester scored in every inning as it defeated Avella, 9-5, in Section 3-A.

Winning pitcher Lucas Mansueti struck out 11 for Rochester (9-0, 9-4). He also went 3-for-4.

Garrett Geresti collected half of the hits for the Eagles (3-5, 5-7), going 3-for-4 with three singles.
