High school baseball roundup: Belle Vernon, California extend long winning streaks

Jordan Zilka went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs as Belle Vernon extended its winning streak to 11 games Monday with a 12-2 victory over host Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-AAAA.

The Leopards (11-2, 13-3) remain one game behind section-leader South Park in the loss column.

Tim Labuda and Deven Judy, the No. 8 and 9 hitters in the belle Vernon lineup, each went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Leopards unleashed a 15-hit attack. Joshua Hoffman was 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

Winning pitcher Evan Johnston and Jake Amatangelo combined on a five-hitter.

The loss eliminated EF (4-9, 5-12) from playoff contention.

• Trey Rohanna and Hunter Robinson, the No. 3 and 4 hitters in Waynesburg’s batting order, combined for five hits, six RBI and five runs as the Section 3-AAA-leading Raiders defeated Washington 13-3 in a five-inning game at Meadowlark Park.

Waynesburg (9-1, 12-2) remains in first place in the section, percentage points ahead of South park (10-2, 11-5), which concluded its section schedule. The Raiders have two league games remaining: today at third-place Brownsville and the completion of a suspended game at fourth-place Charleroi Wednesday.

Against wash High (3-8, 5-10), Waynesburg scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, which included an RBI triple by Rohanna.

Robinson, Ryley Metheny and Kyle Blasco each doubled for Waynesburg and Tyler Rush had two RBI.

Pitchers Brandon Turcheck and Ryan Braun combined on a three-hitter. Steven Shallcross drove in two runs for the Little Prexies.

• Zach Rohaley struck out 11 and walked one as Canon-McMillan defeated Peters Township, 11-2, in a Section 3 game in Class 6-A.

Cam Walker, Ian Hess, Cam Weston and Justin Galati each had a double for C-M, now 12-0 in the section. Xander Cavanaugh doubled for PT (7-5, 13-5).

• Johnny DeFranco drove in two runs and had three of California’s 10 stolen bases as the Section 1-AA champion Trojans ran their winning streak to 16 games with a 7-5 victory over Frazier.

California (14-0, 17-1) scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Winning pitcher Richard Stimmell had a triple, and Brandon Powell and Drake Johnson each doubled, for the Trojans.

Frazier is 4-9, 4-11. Six of the Commodores’ eight hits were doubles.

• Jordan Davis and Zach Southern combined on a six-hitter and Chartiers-Houston overcame a three-run deficit to beat visiting Fort Cherry 6-3 in Section 1-AA.

Fort Cherry (4-9, 7-10) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning but Chartiers-Houston battled back woth a run in the bottom of the second and took the lead with a three-run third.

T.J. Johnston had a double and A.J. Myers scored two runs for the Bucs (11-3, 12-5).

Davis struck out six over five innings and Southern retired all six batters he faced, four on groundouts.

• Dylan Wilson homered and drove in four runs, and Joel Spishock also hit a home run, as Carmichaels overcame an early five-run deficit and defeated visiting Burgettstown 17-7 in a six-inning Section 1-AA game.

Burgettstown (1-11, 2-13) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, which included a two-run homer by Hunter Ayers, but Carmichaels answered with four in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a three-run homer by Wilson in the second inning.

Wilson and Spishock each scored four runs and Nathan Broadwater had four RBI for the Mikes (11-3, 13-4). Six Burgettstown pitchers combined to issue 15 walks and hit two Carmichaels batters.

Brad Ruse was the winning pitcher with 4 2/3 innings of relief.

• Dylan Dingle struck out five and tossed a two-hit shutout as Beth-Center stopped Bentworth, 2-0, in a Section 1-AA game.

Hunter Bowen and Anthony Dellapenna each had an RBI-double and Bailey Lincosky had two hits for the Bearcats (3-10, 3-12). Dingle went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Bentworth fell to 5-8 and 7-11.

• Jefferson-Morgan combined for 33 runs to win twice yesterday.

The Rockets defeated Monessen, 12-2, in the completion of a suspended game and drubbed Mapletown, 21-2, in a three-inning game in Section 2-A.

Against Monessen, Gage Clark struck out nine and went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple, scored twice, had four RBI and stole three bases. Joe Headlee went 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Isaac Dean doubled.

Cory Fleming hit a two-runn home run for Monessen.

Against Mapletown, J-M (9-1, 9-5) scored 13 runs in the first inning. Devin Stoneking struck out four. Clark went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two rBI. Dean went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI and Headlee went 3-for-3 with four runs and four RBI. Jake Broadwater went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

• Cornell and Avella split a doubleheader with Cornel winning Game 1, 3-2, and Avella taking Game 2, 10-2 in Section 3-A.

In Game 1, Bill Welsh struck out 11 and walked three for Cornell (4-7, 5-10). Dalton Simonelli matched that number for Avella. Austin Lis and Noah Taylor each had an RBI double for Avella.

In Game 2, Simonelli had a double, scored three runs and three RBI.
