High school softball roundup: Carmichaels’ Briggs gets 200th win
Dave Briggs chalked up his 200th career victory Tuesday when Carmichaels routed Mapletown, 13-3, in a Section 2-A game.
Kylie Sinn struck out eight and walked none for the playoff-bound Mikes (10-2, 15-5). Among the 19 hits, Kaitlyn Wilson went 3-for-5 with a run and Morgan Faddis went 3-for-5. Abby McIntire doubled for the Maples (4-8, 6-12). Taylor Vanata had two triples and Hannah Dingle doubled.
• Kylah Kubiczki homered and doubled, Lindsay Schmidt drove in four runs and Canon-McMillan defeated Peters Township, 13-2, in five innings to clinch a share of the Class 6-A Section 3 title.
Canon-Mac (10-1, 10-3) can win the section championship outright today with a win at second-place Baldwin (9-2, 11-3). The loss eliminated Peters Township (5-7, 7-7) from playoff contention.
The Big Macs got off to a slow start as PT led 2-0 in the bottom of the third. But C-M scored four times in the third and five runs in the fourth.
Brittney Crawford hit a home run for the Big Macs, who had 14 hits. Ashley Buggey, Julia Ciotti and Makenzie Hollie each doubled to back the winning pitching of Abi Michelucci.
• Marlaina Bozek helped Trinity to a 9-8 win over Ringgold in a Section 2 game in Class 5-A.
Bozek hit two home runs, one a grand slam and the other a solo shot, to account for five of the nine runs for the Hillers (3-9, 5-9). Bailey Bell hit a solo home run and Payton Barr added two double and two RBI.
Johnna Mocniak homered for the playoff-bound Rams (6-6, 10-8).
• Chase Watson went 3-for-5 with four RBI to help Bentworth beat Beth-Center, 16-0, in Section 3-AA. Paige Williams went 3-for-3 with a double and four runs for the Bearcats (6-4, 10-9). Winning pitcher Leah Lindley tripled. Beth-Center fell to 2-8 and 2-10.
• Playoff-bound Chartiers-Houston won its fourth in a row, defeating Fort Cherry 17-0 in a three-inning Section 3-AA game.
Macie Kesneck hit a three-run homer and had five RBI for Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 14-3). Kayla Alderson was 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs and three RBI, Kayla Elliott drove in three runs and Jessica Ford smacked a double.
Winning pitcher Karlyn Bayer allowed only three hits to Fort Cherry (0-10, 4-12).
• Mattie Telegraphis drove in three runs, Tori Cooper doubled and Monessen ended its Section 2-A schedule with a 7-2 victory over visiting California.
Both teams have qualified for the playoffs. Monessen is 8-4 in section and 12-5 overall. California is 5-7, 5-10.
• Frazier defeated Charleroi 13-2 in nonsection game.
Ciara Stickles hit a triple for Charleroi (2-12).
• West Greene needed just four innings to defeat Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A game.
Madison Renner (6-0) got the win, striking out 11 against 1 walk in tossing a two-hitter. Madison Lampe went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs and 4 RBI. Marissa Rode and Linzee Stover had 2 hits each, and Makenzie Thomas scored 2 runs for WG (12-0, 18-1). Linzee Stover, Shelby Morris, and Emily Goodwin had doubles. Renner hit two home runs and McKenna Lampe ended the game with a home run off the concession stand.
