CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Starter Chase Cunningham and reliever Zach Strecker combined on a three-hit shutout as the Wild Things blanked Windy City 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium.

Washington won two of the three games in the opening series of the Frontier League season.

After being held to one hit Saturday night in a loss to the ThunderBolts, Washington exceeded that total only two batters into Sunday’s game when Rashad Brown and Jace Conrad each singled. Brown scored on a single by Bralin Jackson and Conrad raced home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Pollock that made it 2-0.

Brown singled to open the third inning, and after two Windy City errors and a sacrifice fly by Jackson, the Wild Things were up 4-0.

Jackson hit his second double of the game in the sixth inning and scored to make it 5-0 when Kenny People-Walls smacked a triple.

That was more than enough offense for Cunningham, who allowed only two hits and two walks over eight shutout innings. He retired the ThunderBolts in order during six of the innings. In two of the three games in the series, Washington starting pitchers went at least seven innings without allowing an earned run.

Washington begins a three-game series Tuesday morning at Lake Erie. The home opener is Friday night against Windy City at Wild Things Park.
