Myers opts for 1st love in college decision

There are some loves you just don’t give up.
As A.J. Myers and his family moved into the Chartiers-Houston School District right before his freshman year, caused by the relocation of his father’s job, an indifferent feeling settled in over Myers.
One thing he made sure to pack away in the move was a basketball, the symbol of what Myers loved after growing up in Rootstown, Ohio, where he made sure he had control of where Saturday mornings were spent.
“Basketball was my first love,” Myers said. “Every Saturday morning, we had little dribblers at the school. I would wake my dad up and make sure we went to dribble around the gym.”
Many years later, after a memorable career filled with clutch shots that eventually led to him being the all-time leading scorer at Chartiers-Houston, the ball was in Myers’ court again when he committed to play basketball at North Greenville University last week.
North Greenville, a Division II school in Tigerville, S.C., won out over Washington & Jefferson College and Carlow University on the final-three list for Myers.
“They brought me down for a visit and made me feel like family,” Myers said about North Greenville. “I just love the coaching staff, the players are real cool and I thought it was just a good fit.”
A four-year starter in basketball, Myers averaged 22.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game during his senior season as C-H won the Section 2-A championship.
He finished with 1,638 career points.
W&J was interested in Myers in football, also, after he caught 37 passes for 779 yards while scoring nine touchdowns in his final year.
Myers’ commitment came on the same day as the final day of his high school athletic career in the Bucs 3-0 loss in baseball to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. The decision allows him to enjoy a place he didn’t know much of four-and-a-half years ago.
“It’s not all about the sports but about becoming a great kid,” Myers said about C-H. “They set me up for the future. It’s a big relief to finally get the decision over with. Obviously, I’ll have to work to earn my position but I feel if I go down there and compete, then I can get some playing time. Now, I can prepare for it.”
