Late first-half interception leads Waynesburg past Saint Vincent
WAYNESBURG – Junior defensive back Justin Willkow intercepted a Saint Vincent and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown with time winding down in the first half to help spark Waynesburg in a 31-21 victory over the Bearcats in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Willkow’s interception return with 1:55 remaining until halftime gave Waynesburg, which improves to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the PAC, a 24-14 halftime lead after 17 consecutive points.
It’s the Yellow Jackets second victory in a row after defeating Thiel last week.
Saint Vincent cut the Waynesburg lead to only one possession, 24-21, less than a minute into the fourth quarter when quarterback Aaron Austin ran into the end zone from three yards out.
Austin completed 14 of his 19 passes for 104 yards. He also added 60 yards on the ground despite being sacked four times.
The Waynesburg offense answered with a 13-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a Hayden Belcher one-yard touchdown for the final score with 7:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The loss drops Saint Vincent to 1-6 in the PAC and 2-7 overall.
Waynesburg junior running back Austin Wilson had 102 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
