Ashland deals Cal first loss
Ashland 97, California 87:
Wendell Davis scored 37 points and triggered a 19-0 run in the first half that sparked Ashland to a 97-87 victory over California in a nonconference game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Ashland improved its record to 3-0 while California (2-1) lost for the first time in three games.
California led 33-27 with a little more than eight minutes left in the first half when a layup by Ashland’s Drew Noble triggered a swing in the momentum. The basket started the Eagles on a 19-0 run over five minutes that left Cal with a 46-33 deficit. Davis, a 6-6 senior forward, scored nine points during the key stretch.
California pulled to within 50-41 at halftime and made the game interesting down the stretch by trimming Ashland’s lead to 88-83 with 2:13 remaining. That, however, was as close as the Vulcans could get as Ashland made six free throws in the final 92 seconds and Davis made one of his five three-pointers.
Davis made 13 of 17 shots, including five of seven from three-point range, to go with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Ben Haraway also had a big game for Ashland, scoring 28 points. The Eagles shot 64 percent and made 15 of 20 shots from the field in the second half.
Cordell Smith and Isaiah Lewis each scored 23 points to pace California, which shot 55 percent. Jahmere Howze followed with 17 points for the Vulcans, who begin PSAC play this weekend when they host Kutztown Saturday afternoon and Mansfield Sunday.
