Waynesburg overwhelmed by top-ranked Whitman
WALLA WALLA, Wash – Jack Stewart and Tim Howell each scored 16 points to lead Whitman, the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division III, to a 113-74 victory over Waynesburg in a men’s basketball season opener Friday night.
Whitman made 18 three-point field goals and shot 50 percent from the field. The Blues led by 30 points (55-25) at halftime. Whitman averaged 92 points per game last season.
Waynesburg’s Matt Popeck, the Observer-Reporter’s Boys Basketball Player of the Year each the past two years while playing for Washington High School, scored a team-high 23 points in his first collegiate game. Popeck made nine of 13 shots and was 4-for-4 from three-point range. Frank Bozicevic was the only other Waynesburg player to score in double figures as he tallied 14 points. The Yellow Jackets made 11 three-pointers.
Whitman had a huge advnatage at the free-throw line, making 17 of 27 attempts. Waynesburg was only 3-for-3. The Yellow Jackets committed 41 turnovers, which led to 46 points for Whitman.
