Small college basketball roundup: Cal, W&J, Waynesburg women with victories

Shatara Parsons led four California University players in double figures with 17 points and the Vulcans, who are ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, rolled to an 80-41 victory over visiting Goldey-Beacom Tuesday night.

California (5-0) forced 34 turnovers by the Lightning and held the visitors to only 17 points in the second half. Goldey-Beacom attempted only three free throws in the game.

The Vulcans, who shot 53 percent from the field, forged a 48-24 halftime lead and dominated on the boards with 13 offensive rebounds.

Natalia Casals scored 13 points, Mia Cushion had 12 and D.J. Hahn contributed 11 points and a team-high 19 rebounds.

Wash & Jeff 82, Geneva 48: Amirah Moore scored 18 points, leading four Washington & Jefferson players in double figures, as the Presidents remained undefeated with an 82-48 victory over host Geneva in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener.

W&J (1-0, 3-0) took control of the game in the second quarter and built a 44-24 lead by halftime. W&J’s Danielle Parker scored 12 of her 14 points in the big first half.

Freshman Lauren Gilbert scored 15 points for W&J and freshman Alie Seto had 10. Mya Grodon finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Geneva (0-1, 1-2) did not have a player score in double figures. The Golden Tornadoes were held to eight second-half field goals.

Waynesburg 76, Bridgewater 72: Addy Kentzer and Rachel Eng each scored 15 points and Waynesburg rode a 31-point third quarter to a 76-72 victory over Bridgewater in a nonconference game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

It was the first win of the season for Waynesburg (1-2). The Yellow Jackets seemed to be comfortably in command leading 72-55 with four minutes remaining. Bridgewater (1-3) then made it interesting at the end but could get no closer than four points.

Waynesburg led 30-25 at halftime and made seven three-pointers in the big third quarter.

Monica Starre played a solid all-around game for Waynesburg with 12 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

Ahlia Moone had a game-high 17 points for Bridgewater.

Men’s result

Juniata 80, Wash & Jeff 54: Marcus Lee made 10 of 14 shots, scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Juniata to an 80-54 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a nonconference game at Henry Memorial Center.

Juniata (3-0) shot 55 percent from the field and held a 37-21 edge on the boards. Lee, who was the MVP of a tournament at Penn State Altoona over the weekend, did most of his damage in the second half after being held to six points in the opening 20 minutes.

Brandon Martinazzi scored 18 points, Seth Brewer had 12 and Damon Rickens 10 for the the Eagles.

W&J (0-3) was held to 37 percent shooting and had only Brian Gryatok, with 11 points, score in double figures.
