Small college basketball roundup: Strong 2nd half nets W&J men first win

Washington & Jefferson put four players in double figures and scored 48 second-half points Saturday en route to an 88-81 victory over Muskingum in a nonconference game played in New Concord, Ohio.

W&J (1-3) used a 13-4 run early in the second half to take control of the game and maintained the lead by shooting 57 percent from the field for the game and making 19 free throws in the second half.

Brian Lindquist paced W&J with 20 points. Nicholas Campalong followed with 16 points, Mike Zappala had 13 points and Jonathan DeVito 12 including three baskets from three-point range. DeVito did all of his scoring in the first half.

Muskingum’s Marcus Dempsey and Jarrell Marsh combined for 51 points but they weren’t enough for the Muskies (0-3). Dempsey scored a game-high 31 points and made four of Muskingum’s 11 three-point field goals.

Women’s result

Washington & Jefferson 78, Allegheny 61: Danielle Parker had game-highs of 25 points and nine rebounds, and Washington & Jefferson held host Allegheny to 24 second-half points as the Presidents remained undefeated with a 78-61 victory in a nonconference game.

Parker, a junior forward and Canon-McMillan graduate, made 10 of 17 shots from the field and five of six free throws. She scored 12 of her points in the first half, when W&J (4-0) forged a 40-37 lead.

The Presidents then held Allegheny (2-2) to 9-for-32 shooting in the second half. The Gators were 3 of 18 from three-point range after halftime.

Allegheny was still within striking distance after the third quarter, trailing 57-54, but the Gators scored only seven points in the fourth quarter. Allegheny went the first 5:49 of the fourth quarter without making a field goal.

Lauren Gilbert followed Parker in the scoring column with 16 points for W&J, which protected its lead by making 11 of 12 free throws. Gilbert also had a team-high four steals. Amirah Moore scored 12 points.

Waynesburg 77, Hiram 66: Monica Starre scored 19 points and Waynesburg never trailed in the Yellow Jackets’ 77-66 victory over visiting Hiram in a nonconference game.

Waynesburg (2-2) had four double-digit scorers led by Starre, who also had a game-high nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds.

Addy Knetzer had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Rachel Eng scored 14 points and Mackenna Drazich 11 points.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first eight points and led 38-19 at halftime.

Hiram (1-5) closed to within 66-60 left but a layup by Starre and a three-pointer by freshman Andrea Orlosky pushed Waynesburg’s lead back to double digits.
