Benson’s 4th goal helps Waynesburg advance
Gavin Benson’s fourth goal of the match, at 2:30 into the first overtime, gave Waynesburg a 6-5 victory over Obama Academy in a wild WPIAL Class AA boys soccer first-round game Saturdasy afternoon at South Park.
The win sends seventh-seeded Waynesburg (12-6) into the quarterfinals Wednesday night against Shady Side Academy at a site and time to be determined. SSA upset second-seeded South Park 5-2 in the first round. It will be rematch of a quarterfinal matchup last year, won by SSA, 3-2.
Benson scored one goal in the first half, two more in the second half and the game-winner. Blake Brewer and Dalton Woods also scored goals for Waynesburg.
The Raiders took a 5-4 lead with 2:36 left in regulation on the goal by Woods but Obama (12-5-1) managed to get the tying goal and force overtime.
Canon-McMillan 2, Norwin 1: Tommy Samosky’s second goal of the match came in the final minute of overtime and gave Canon-McMillan a 2-1 victory over host Norwin in a Class AAAA first-round playoff game.
Samosky scored the game-winner on a header from point-blank range, sending the Big Macs (11-6) into the quarterfinals against third-seeded Franklin Regional, a 2-1 winner over Mt. Lebanon.
Samosky had given Canon-McMillan a 1-0 lead, scoring off a redirected header three minutes into the second half. Norwin (11-4-4) made it 1-1, scoring with only 6:30 remaining in regulation. Samosky’s game-winning goal was his sixth of the season.
Bentworth 2, OLSH 0: Jake Davis scored two goals – one in each half – and goalkeeper Austin Curry stopped seven shots as eight-seeded Bentworth defeated Our Lady of Scared Heart 2-0 in a WPIAL Class A boys soccer first-round playoff match at South Fayette High School.
Bentworth (13-6) moves on to the quarterfinals Wednesday against top-seeded Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. North Catholic blasted Quigley 10-0 in the opening round.
Belle Vernon 4, Hampton 1: Aaron Brown scored two goals and Belle Vernon forged a three-goal lead in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over Hampton in a Class AAA first-round match at Weir Stadium.
Belle Vernon (14-4-1), the No. 8 seed, advances to play top-seeded West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Wednesday. West Allegheny was a 9-0 winner over West Mifflin in the first round.
Brown, Jackson Guess and Markello Apodiakos each scored in the first half for Belle Vernon. Brown tallied his second goal of the day during the second half.
Goalkeeper Cam Guess made four saves for the Leopards.
GCC 3, Chartiers-Houston 0: Despite a surge late in the second half, Chartiers-Houston fell 3-1 to Greensburg Central Catholic in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs at Peters Township.
GCC, the No. 5 seed, led 2-0 at halftime and tacked on another goal early in the second half.
The No. 12-seeded Bucs got on the scoreboard halfway through the second half with a goal from Austin Arnold, assisted by Dominic Hancq, off a free kick. GCC dominated most of the game’s possession time, but the Bucs had several shots on goal during the last 20 minutes.
It only took Lucas Mort only 41 seconds to give the Centurionsa 1-0 lead. Joseph Szekely scored to increase GCC’s lead to 2-0 about five minutes before halftime. Mort struck again early in the second half, scoring a goal two minutes into the period.
C-H goalkeeper Tom Dzadovsky was under siege all game, and despite allowing three goals, the senior still totaled nine saves.
Central Valley 6, Charleroi 0: Twin brothers from Central Valley accounted for five Warrior goals to beat Charleroi 6-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs at Peters Township.
Gabe Samangy netted a hat trick, and twin brother Dom Samangy scored a goal and assisted another in the upset over the sixth-seeded Charleroi.
Despite ending in a blowout, the first half was a competitive match with the 11th-seeded Warriors leading 1-0 at half on a Dom Samangy goal, assisted by Brendan Jugan, five minutes before halftime.
Gabe Samangy then scored three goals in the second half, two of which were 90 seconds apart from each other and one that was assisted by his brother. Jugan and Marco Masciantonio both added goals to put the match away for the Warriors.
Quaker Valley 7, McGuffey 0: Seven different Quaker Valley players scored goals as the top-seeded Quaker defeated McGuffey 7-0 in a Class AA first-round match.
Quaker Valley (17-1), which has won eight WPIAL championships, led by only 1-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before pulling away.
McGuffey ends its season with a 6-9-2 record.
Chartiers Valley 5, Trinity 0: Second-seeded Chartiers Valley scored three first-half goal and defeated Trinity 5-0 in a Class AAA first-round match.
Trinity ends its season with an 11-8 record. Chartiers Valley improves to 15-3 and moves onmto the quarterfinals. The Colts have won nine in a row.
