Strong first half carries West Greene to 7th win
INDUSTRY – West Greene used short touchdown runs by Ben Jackson and Andrew Litton in the first half, and a 56-yard scoring scamper by quarterback Zach Pettit midway through the fourth quarter, to defeat Western Beaver 20-14 Saturday afternoon in a nonconference matchup of playoff-bound Class A teams.
But it was a costly victory as Jackson was knocked out of the game with an ankle injury in the third quarter. He is out indefinitely.
West Greene (7-2) held Western Beaver to only two first downs and 44 total yards in the first half. The Pioneers took a 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter before Western beaver (6-3) mounted a comeback.
Jeddy Young’s six-yard touchdown run pulled the Golden Beavers to within 14-7 early in the fourth quarter, but Pettit’s 56-yard scoring run with only 6:22 remaining put West Greene ahead 20-7.
Only 22 seconds after Pettit’s score, Young threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Lou Hapach that cut the Pioneers’ lead to 20-14.
Pettit knocked away a pass in the end zone with no time remaining to seal the win.
Jackson opened the scoring with a two-yard run and Litton added a four-yard TD run midway through the second quarter. Jackson’s two-point conversion run made the score 14-0, which stood until the fourth quarter.
