CMU comeback trips up Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG – Alex Cline threw three touchdown passes and carnegie Mellon erased a halftime dericit by scoring 24 unanswered points to rally and defeat Waynesburg 30-20 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday at Wiley Stadium.
Waynesburg (0-1, 0-3) used a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Perone and field goals of 33 and 36 yards by Garrett Guthrie to forge a 13-6 lead early int he third quarter.
Cline, who completed 12 of 20 passes for 187 yards, pulled CMU into a 13-13 tie with a a 38-yard touchdown pass to John Prather with two seconds left in the third quarter. Cline hooke dup with Karl-Mark Kumm for a 28-yard touchdown that gave the Tartans a 20-13 lead with 12:08 remaining.
CMU secured the win with a 33-yard field goal by Tyler Kohman midway through the fourth quarter and a two-yard touchdown run by Rory Hubbard with 5:34 remaining.
Waynesburg capped the scoring with a 20-yard pass from Perone to Jake Daugherty.
CMU outgained Waynesburg 312 yards to 270 but the Yellow Jackets held a 20-14 edge in first downs. Waynesburg had a 19-play drive in the first quarter that was capped by Guthrie’s first field goal.
Senior linebacker Brent Blacharczyk led the Waynesburg defense with two of the Yellow Jackets’ four sacks.
