Case Western builds big lead, rolls over Waynesburg
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Undefeated Case Western Reserve built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-21 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday night.
Jacob Burke ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense for Case Western. Quarterback Rob Cuda completed 17 of 26 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns as the Spartans improved to 2-0 in the conference and 3-0 overall.
Waynesburg (0-2, 0-4) got off a slow start and did not gain its initial first down until less than nine minutes were left in the first half as the Yellow Jackets lost their eighth straight dating back to last season.
The Yellow Jackets closed to within 14-7 when Tyler Perone threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to JuWuan Jones in the second quarter.
Case Western, however, scored two touchdowns in the final 2:14 of the half. Burke scored on a five-yard run to make it 21-7, and one play after the Case Western defense intercepted a Perone pass, Cuda threw 29 yards to Justin Phan to give the Spartans a three-touchdown edge at halftime. Cuda passed for 203 yards in the first half.
Waynesburg drove 79 yards for a touchdown on its opening drive of the second half to pull to within 28-14. Perone threw a 13-yard TD to Chad Walker. Austin Wilson set up the score with a 54-yard run to CWR 17-yard line. Waynesburg had been held to minus-4 rushing yards in the first half.
Burke scored his third touchdown, on a two-yard run, Cuda hit Aaron Aguilar coming out of the backfield for a 9-yard score on the final play of the third quarter and Myles Anthony had a two-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter to give CWR a 49-14 lead.
Perone, who completed 18 of 32 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, hooked up with Jones again for a five-yard touchdown that capped the scoring for Waynesburg.
