Roman scores 2 as Canon-Mac deals PT first loss

McMURRAY – Addie Roman’s goal with only 2:14 remaining – her second of the night – gave defending PIAA champion Canon-McMillan a 2-1 victory over Peters Township in a key Section 2-AAAA girls soccer match Monday.
Roman’s goal capped a flurry of offense in the final nine minutes, when all three goals were scored.
Canon-McMillan was able to rebound from a disappointing 1-1 tie at Bethel Park Thursday night and a 2-0 nonsection loss to Mars Saturday. The Big Macs are 4-0-1 in section and 6-1-1 overall.
Peters Township lost for the first time all season, falling to 3-1 in section and 8-1 overall. With Norwin’s loss to Penn-Trafford Monday, Peters Township had a chance to be the lone remaining undefeated team in Class AAAA.
“The key was the loss against Mars,” Canon-Mac coach Dave Derrico said. “I think they came back. They didn’t play well against Mars and brought that energy tonight.”
Roman, who scored the game-winner in C-M’s state championship win over Central Bucks South last year, broke a scoreless tie with only 8:42 remaining.
It didn’t take long for Peters Township to score the equalizer. Hannah Stuck scored off an assist from Regan LaVigna with more than five minutes remaining and made it 1-1.
That was enough time for Roman to strike back and score the game-winner, her 10th goal of the season. Annabelle Thomas assisted on both of Roman’s goals.
Peters Township had 11 shots on goal to Canon-McMillan’s six.
The Indians had four corner kicks.
“We knew what kind of game Peters was going to play against us,” Derrico said. “We worked this week on defending set pieces because they’re deadly on set pieces and corners, so we were trying to mitigate those situations.”
