High school softball roundup: Trinity powers way to victory
Emma Morgan hit a three-run home run to help Trinity burst past Laurel Highlands, 8-4, in Section 2 of Class 5A.
Kylie Poland hit a solo home run for the Hillers (2-0, 5-1). Bailey Bell went 3-for-4 with a triple and RBI. Marlena Bozek also tripled. Payton Barr went 3-for-3.
Laurel Highlands (0-1, 1-1) had four hits.
Elizabeth Forward 2, Belle Vernon 0: Jordan Pinneri had the lone hit of the game for Elizabeth Forward but it was enough for the Warriors to down Belle Vernon, 2-0, in a Section 2 game in Class 4A.
Elizabeth Forward (1-0, 6-0) scored a run in fifth inning and an insurance run in the seventh to support starting pitcher Kailey Larcinese, who only allowed three hits and struck out nine for the win.
Bailey Parshall couldn’t do much more for Belle Vernon (0-1, 1-1) with 15 strikeouts in the circle and two of the three hits for the Leopards. Parshall suffered the loss.
Waynesburg 11, Brownsville 6: Bailee Shimek hit a three-run home run to spark a seven-run fourth inning as Waynesburg defeated Brownsville 11-6 in a Section 3 contest of Class 3A.
Shimek’s homer was one of two on the day for the Raiders. Paige Rutan hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Aubri Hogsett had a two-run blast for Brownsville (0-1, 1-3) in the seventh.
Jordan Sibert earned the win in the circle for Waynesburg (1-0, 3-1). She had four strikeouts.
Southmoreland 18, Charleroi 0: Emily Eutsey had three hits, including two doubles, as Southmoreland defeated Charleroi 18-0 in a Class 3A, Section 3 game that lasted only four innings.
Bethany Bunner and Hannah Corvin each had three hits for the Southmoreland (1-0, 1-1).
Kylie Quigley suffered the loss for Charleroi (0-1, 0-2).
Carmichaels 14, Avella 2: Carmichaels scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 14-2 win over Section 2-A foe Avella.
The Mikes tacked on three runs in both the second and third innings and two runs in the fourth inning to win via a five-inning mercy rule.
Carmichaels (1-0, 2-1) ripped off 16 hits in the win, with Shelby McCann and Gina Ranieri leading the way with doubles. The Mikes offense also was aided by a handful of Avella (0-2, 0-2) errors.
Kylie Sinn earned the win in the circle, striking out five batters and walking four in five innings. Emily Pollock took the loss for the Eagles. She also roped a triple, which was one of two Avella hits.
